the first time i tried to read this book...did not turn out so well. i may have gotten a whole 10 pages into it before deciding all the hoopla was for nothing. just couldn't do it. i was constantly told how good it was and if i could just get past the very beginning i'd love it. well, i gave it another shot and i did indeed love it! i couldn't put it down! it was like a wild goose chase and i just had to know what was going to happen next. highly recommend!

I really loved this book. For some reason, I had a difficult time getting into it, but about 35 pages in I was hooked! I'm not sure if this is an original tale, and I saw a lot of the twists coming, but it is a lot of fun, the characters are wonderful, and I love the self-exploratory journey the title character takes. I may need to buy this for my permanant collection.

This book, in my opinion, should have been named, "And then we came to the end...of this book, and we were GLAD it was over." Fresh writing style, but it was too convoluted to follow. If the author had chosen to use this stream of consciousness style, the least he could have done was put the events in SOME SORT of chronological order. I have slogged through this book for TWO WEEKS, and frankly, I may just GIVE UP. I'd recommend it only because it's a new style of writing. Maybe you will enjoy it more than I did.

taken from my blog: http://yumyabooks.wordpress.com/ rating: 3.5 stars My Summary: Mercy has lost herself. She can’t count how many times she’s ‘woken up’ in a new body, assumed a new life, only to move on to another body, again and again. In Paradise, Mercy meets Ryan whose still reeling from his sister went missing over two years ago, and now presumed dead. Everyone had given up hope looking for her long ago, but Ryan still believes that he can find her. And Mercy, using powers she didn’t even know she had, founds out he’s right. Ryan’s sister is still alive. And then, when another girl goes missing, Mercy and Ryan know they must act before their time runs out. But why is the strange man who haunts Mercy’s dreams cautioning her not to interfere? And why is it that with every step closer to discovering the truth about the missing girls, a host of angels out for Mercy’s blood because of a crime she committed, loom closer? And that crime Mercy supposedly committed, in fact, she can’t even remember doing? My thoughts: Mercy had me from the first page. Rebecca Lim’s way of getting across Mercy’s frustration and confusion is really well done. Those who feel like they don’t know themselves or they’re unsure of what their ‘purpose’ is in life can probably relate to Mercy, who feels the same way. The plot thickens really just in the first few chapters so it’s straight into the story. It’s a great angels/murder mystery combination. I don’t think I’ve ever read those two things incorporated so it was really interesting. Although, I did figure out the mystery about three quarters of the way in, and the whole time I was thinking ‘how can you not know?’ about Mercy, who seemed oblivious and didn’t work it out. A lot of people like the fact that Carmen – the girl Mercy inhabits in Ohio – isn’t very good looking and still a good looking guy falls for her. I think it’s different because usually the main character is absolutely gorgeous which is pretty unrealistic considering they’re supposed to be average people. It’s great to see Mercy change as a person. Before she was a cold hearted and actually quite a ruthless person because the changing bodies made her a little more detached But throughout the book she turns into a warm hearted passionate person that is very likable. She in fact believes that she is supposed to help each person she inhabits live a better life once she’s gone. Before Carmen, she’s been a drug addict with a baby, an ignored rich brat, and several other woman at many different ages, so she hasn’t always been a teenager in every lifetime which I think is good. The story features a lot of music as it is set at a singing camp and it’s rather mystical and enchanting. I like the idea that Mercy can’t remember what she did wrong to be exiled. Mercy is different to anything I’ve ever read. Rebecca Lim is an Australian author with an amazing imagination and I’ll be reading the others in the series as the book is so intriguing.

This book was given to me by one of my favorite undergraduate professors. I have not read it yet (it is a very daunting task--it is several hundred pages long), but hope to in the near future. For those that don't know, Duiker is one of, if not the preeminent scholar on Vietnam, the war there, and Ho Chi Minh...

Jose Saramago is not an author you want to read if you like to have everything wrapped up with a bow and fully explained in the end. In novel after novel, Saramago drops characters into bizarre circumstances and very rarely (if ever) explains exactly how or why those circumstances came about. In this particular tale, Saramago has the entire Iberian Peninsula cleave from the rest of Europe and begin a journey sailing out to sea. The story focuses on 5 people and one dog on the peninsula as they attempt to understand how their lives and homeland have changed. All five characters had improbable events happen to them right around the time when the peninsula split from the mainland. The characters try to determine if these occurances are directly related to the fracture of the peninsula from Europe. The book contains social and political undertones like many other Saramago novels. Also like other Saramago novels the books is intellectual and there is more to gather from reading it other than the main plotline. Saramago novels are allegorical and like the others "The Stone Raft" is commenting on society. Saramago is one of my favorite authors and I found The Stone Raft to fit in well with his other works. I didn't enjoy it quite as much as I liked several of his other novels Blindness, All the Names, The Cave or The Double. Saramago also has a very unique writing style with lots of run on sentances and no quotation marks. This can be a challenge for readers who are new to Saramago's works. In my opinion it is worth the effort and besides you soon enough become used to his writing style.

Rare time a flim was better evolved than the book. But I do enjoy the mystery entwined with reality.

Please note: I don't go out of my way to read so-called chick-lit, but I was in the airport and I didn't have a lot of options. That being said here's what I wrote down about it . . . At times this book really dove into the "too chick-lit"-y for me genre. To be honest, I only bought it because I didn't have a lot of options at the airport. But, also to be honest, I felt like I couldn't put it down until I was done with it. I enjoyed it enough. At the end, reading the intro to the next book, all I could think was "why the hell would I want to read that?" But now I kind of want to read it. I'm fickle like that.
