Highlights of this book are a good intuitive description of smoothing and an excellent exposition on the Early parser...This book and Foundations of Statistical Natural Language Processing by Christopher D. Manning and Hinrich Schütze are the standard textbooks in natural language processing. For my money, Manning and Schütze is the better book--I find the exposition clearer and the math more rigorous--but Jurafsky and Martin covers more ground and assumes slightly less mathematical background. Regardless, the two books complement each other, so if you're in this field you need both.

A lot of the stories and tangents were fascinating, but the overall thesis (that very successful people get that way mainly through fortuitous circumstances) seemed pretty thin and forced to me. I didn't enjoy this as much as The Tipping Point or Blink, but I'd recommend it as a audio book pick for a long drive. It's lively and interesting.

I pretended to hate this book. I actually like it because it makes me think of random things, and my brain does not think of random things on its own very well sometimes, but I think it is helpful for brains to be able to do so.

Unwind, to me, is probably the best YA dystopian book ever. I read it in 2010 and it’s one of the few YA books that has stayed relevant and every bit as good as the first time I read it. This books is set in an unspecified future where children below the age of eighteen can be “unwound”. It’s a difficult concept to explain, but simply put, it’s something like organ harvesting. It kind of ensures that your “soul” is split too, but you’re not actually dead. The concept is dealt with pretty clearly in the book, so have no fear. It’s about three kids, Connor, Risa, and Lev, who are to be unwound but end up escaping and then trying to survive in a cruel world. Connor is put up to be unwound by his parents, Risa because she’s a ward of the State and Lev because he’s a child who has been specifically conceived and raised for the very purpose of unwinding. What I really like about the book is that it combines several of my favourite themes: runaway children, militia groups, a dash of romance, etc. It’s a brilliantly executed novel and well-paced, which ensures that you’re never bored. It stays with you long after you’re done with it and makes you want to pursue this dystopian genre mercilessly, looking for another gem. Truth is, I haven’t found any book that really matches up to Unwind. It’s kind of spoiled me for life. There’s a sequel, called “Unwholly” which is out, so be sure to check that out as well. But that’s the thing. You don’t really need to pursue the sequel because Unwind works as a great standalone by itself.

** spoiler alert ** In Fabletown, where fairy tale legends live alongside regular New Yorkers, the question is all anyone can talk about. But only the Big Bad Wolf can actually solve the case - and, along with Rose's sister Snow White, keep the Fabletown community from coming apart at the seams. I actually never would have guess that rose red faked her death. But really... where there any fairy tales with her in it? I don't seem to remember. All in all, the series is extremely catching and well drawn

I like this one a lot more than various "stuck vehicle books." There's vocabulary, rhyme, and a small problem with a clever solution (provided by kids).

Anyone interested in the 60s and early 70s in America should read this book. It's fascinating - especially for those jaded about American politics the way I am. The author is liberal but he certainly doesn't paint some sunny, unrealistic picture of the Democrats in this book. No, everyone's at fault for the political landscape we have to deal with today. I'm glad I took the time to learn more about Richard Nixon.
