This is one of my favorites! I absolutely loved the ending.
Quite a few unexpected things in this one. It threw me for a loop a couple times, but I've recovered. Looking forward to the next book.

Lyrically brilliant for someone so young. Very like Catch 22 or Slaughterhouse Five.

The book is entertaining enough, but while I read it I couldn't shake off the sense that the author was trying to write The Great American Novel(tm), and maybe trying a little too hard. Also, I really did not care for the way Chip's storyline descended into utterly random absurdity (the whole Lithuania crime ring subplot? Came out of _nowhere_.) That said, the other character sketches were for the most part amusing, particularly the overbearing Enid. It's a great escapist read while on extended visits to the parents.

great start and good account of the Stones and what was going on in the various countries during that time.

JA Jance certainly has a knack for hooking me in. This was a perfect things to read for pure entertainment, but a little frenetic. There were just so many bad things happening to so few people in so few days and the unlikely coincidences abound. Ali Reynolds is only OK as a new detective. I miss Joanna Brady. Still, I read the whole thing in one day, so clearly I had some fun with it.
3.5 This book was good. Very good, and I like it a lot. At first, for about the first 150 pages, I was kind of bored. There was no plot. Then thing got a bit for interesting. For one, we find out that Cassel is a worker. And a very rare worker. He brings Lila back, and they bust Anton and Phillip. It was interesting, I had to admit. Although when I saw how many pages were left, I felt kind of cheated. Only that much left to wrap up the book? Other than that, the lead made me want more with questions such as, how did he get on the roof? The ending also had the same effect, yet ended in a sense of resolution. Will Lila get mad at him? When will she come back to normal?

It's the war in heaven, it's the Fall, it's the banishment from Eden, it's Milton...just a few of my favourite things, not because I believe in all this stuff, but because I think it makes for such magnificent melodrama, especially in the capable hands of John Milton. Lucifer/Satan has always struck me as such a tragic figure, the classic anti-hero (Byronic ... Shakespearean even)...the ambitious over-reacher just before his figurative (and literal) fall. In this light, it's almost impossible not to have some sympathy for the devil... Unlike the majority of tragic figures, Lucifer isn't undone by his Fall, but rises above it, becoming stronger (rather than weaker) and making it work for him. He should have been humbled, he should have been laid low, but the arrogant son of a bitch refused to submit. For me, that's what makes him interesting, and in the hands of talented writers, Lucifer can spout some pretty seductive insights -- and no, I'm not a Satanist! ... this is purely literary appreciation, and recognizing the fact that villains are just always more fascinating than the good guys -- i.e. Tony Montana, Michael Corleone, Hannibal Lecter, Iago, Lestat, the Joker!
