It is really disconcerting when I hate a book everyone loved. I don't look forward to writing these kinds of reviews (most of the time.) It especially pains me because Harris lives in Michigan, and I know she's been inside the book store I used to work at. To be honest though, the writing was juvenile and amateurish, and the plot was even more ridiculous than I thought a zombie story had any right to be. At 200 pages, this short novel seems like it was written with middle-school children in mind than seniors in high school. Some of the subject matter would be iffy for a younger teen, but it's actually not especially graphic. The main character talks about "hooking up" with a boy, some body parts get torn or bitten off, and just about everyone pukes at least once. There is lots and lots of puking. None of this was especially surprising though, it is a zombie book, after all. I thought this was supposed to be funny, but I didn't even smirk once while reading this. I love zombie movies and I enjoy dark humor, but this book couldn't have fallen flatter for me. The plot is steeped in so much pseudo-science that even though I'm practically a layman, the way the main character figures out a cure for the zombie virus really made me cringe. The "science" is appalling. How about some young adult fiction clichés? Here's a handful for you: 1. Nerd girl with bad hair and no boobs lusts after the popular boy 2. Bratty younger brother is bratty 3. All parents are non-existent for the majority of the book (view spoiler) 4. Nerd girl constantly remarks on how much prettier her friends are, how much of an awkward dork she is, and constantly berates herself for being smart 5. (view spoiler) 6. (view spoiler) Points go to all of the Polish last names, "pop" instead of "soda," and the beautiful cover. Everything else was a waste of time and I don't recommend this book at all.

By Far the best C.S. Lewis book ever written. I tell everyone I know to read this book. This book, more than any others, shows the human struggle and complexity belief in an unseen God provides. I love the way Lewis weaves together the small signs given throughout the story to provide just enough room to doubt. Unlike his other books, Till We Have Faces is not obvious and the reader finds themselves evaluating their own inner voices when things turn out to not be what they seem.

I liked this book quite a bit. I thought it was a bit slow moving and a lot pedantic at times, but it grappled with many tough issues. I wish my book group had selected it, as I think it would make for a good discussion. I'm certainly not a hunter, but I live in a rural area, and I found flaws in several of the book's comments on hunting. One I can recall is the statement that car accidents involving deer rise dramatically during hunting season, because the deer are frantically being chased. True, there are more deer related car accidents during hunting season, but it's because the deer are in rut and as a result half-crazed, not because they're neurotic about being stalked. Comments such as this then cause me to question other statements the book declares as fact. I liked how Spencer, Charlotte and their relationship grew during the novel. Sarah and Willow were a bit too good to be true, however and Spencer's co-workers were completely one dimensional. The graphic details about how animals are slaughtered were difficult to read, but I think they were important to the novel. I would definitely recommend this book to others.

Well written. Makes me glad I voted for this man and does actually give me some hope that we can begin to solve some of the huge problems we are facing as a nation. Worth the read.

A sort of sequel to his Go With Me in that Sheriff Wingate puts in a brief appearance (though he influenced the current Sheriff Wing). This short novel gets moving almost from the beginning and continues to the end. Sheriff Wing is confronting problems on many fronts -- his wife, his job, and his life in general. Add to that several Russians who have decided his county in Vermont is a great place to relax till a local causes a problem.

SECOND READ: March 26, 2010 Listened to the audio book edition. The reader isn't the best, but dang it all if I forgot just how funny the banter is in this book! It makes me forget that I don't care for the reader because I am so busy smirking and laughing out loud so often. I still love this book! I tried to distract myself at the sad part by (1) knowing it was coming, (2) only half-listening to the audio book, and (3) cleaning the bathrooms. But dang that Shannon Hale for still making me cry despite it all. Seriously, I was washing the mirror when a tear rolled down my cheek. But I still did quite a bit of laughing out loud (and even smiling/smirking like a geek while listening to the book while grocery shopping). -------------------------- FIRST READ: March 4, 2009 I smiled. I smirked. I giggled. I laughed. I laughed some more. I mulled the problem in my head. I laughed A LOT more. I thought about it some more. Then I laughed so stinkin' hard that I had to put the book down 3 separate times before being able to continue reading. I thought some more. I laughed hard again and had to put the book down a second time to calm down my out-loud uncontrolled laughter. Then I got teary. Literally. Followed by some smiles. More tears. More giggles. More thinking. Then some big alligator tears. A smile. A smirk. Some more giggles. Some more laughter. Some cursing at the characters for being stupid. Some relief when they seemed to be headed back in the right direction again. Some more laughing. Well actually, a lot more laughing. And then the perfect ending for this story.

Excellent research. Tells the tale of the first Americans to fight the Germans in WWII. I've read a lot of WWII history, and this is the first I've heard of these brave men. Also follows the top German aces as they fight in the Battle of Britain.
