Pretty good book and I'm not a huge fan of LDS literature but I really liked it I'm reading the next one Tribunal right now.

Much more compelling the second time I read it.

I first read this series when I was little. I couldn't read yet, but every night my dad would sit down on the couch in our room and me and my brother would lean against each shoulder and he would read to us. He would read about 20 pages a day and I always wanted to here about the next thing that Benny would do, or Henry would find, or Jessi would cook, or Violet would make.

I liked that the protagonist is not a wilting, weak woman. The book had (at least for me) an unexpected ending.

Read this during a plane ride. One of the best little books I've come across. Skip the movie. REREAD - 8/15/2008 84, Cross Cross Road, by Helene Hanff, is one of my favorite books of all time. Clocking in at less than 100 pages, it’s a short but delightful read. Seriously. Delightful. Helene Hanff is a writer in New York. She writes to Marks & Co. in London in 1949, looking for rare and out-of-print books. Frank Doel responds on behalf of Marks & Co., and so begins a twenty-year correspondance and friendship. I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’ll stop the summary there. Here are a few of my favorite tidbits: “But they are profoundly shcoked to see me drop a book in the wastebasket or give it away. The way they look at it, you buy a book, you read it, you put it on the shelf, you never open it again for the rest of your life but YOU DON’T THROW IT OUT! NOT IF IT HAS A HARD COVER ON IT! Why not? I personally can’t think of anything less sacrosanct than a bad book or even a mediocre book. “WELL!!! All I have to say to YOU, Frank Doel, is we live in depraved, destructive and degenerate times when a bookshop - a BOOKSHOP - starts tearing up beautiful old books to use as wrapping paper. I sad to John Henry when he stepped out of it: “Would you believe a thing like that, Your Eminence?” and he said he wouldn’t. You tore that book up in the middle of a major battle and I don’t even know which war it was.” This book showcases friendship and generosity and bibliophilia. What more could you want? Go out and read it!!

An interesting look at television. The book features a lot of trivia about television, performers, and the media. Like other books in this series, this is an easy read. It is made of lists with commentary and text, so you can browse through the book a bit at a time, or go right through. What I like about books like this is that I can learn something while getting some entertainment.

Our youngest brought this book home from school to practice her reading. It's a short book, with lots of repetition and it has colorful illustrations. The simple narrative in this book helps children learn to read.

I think 2 1/2 stars would be more appropriate, but what are you going to do? Thinner was OK. My experience was hampered since I had seen the movie years before. The book is better, but it follows the same basic bullet points as the film, so there were no real surprises. It's a simple tale of a normal man paying for his sins. It's a bit long. The story seems better suited for a novella or an episode of The Twilight Zone. I'm sure my reading experience suffered since I knew all the plot twists and turns in advance, but I can say this "If you didn't like the movie, you won't like this book."

Three and a half really. Exhilarating and beautiful in parts, however some of the language play is by and large unreadable.

This book is really influential in social science circles, which is why I read it. The point he makes is essential for anyone trying to do economics, like me. The basic lesson is simple: the rules of the game make a huge difference in whether mutually beneficial transactions are undertaken or not. Exploitation and oppression can be built into the structure by parties who have greater bargaining strength. The book can be a dry read, as North sometimes spends whole pages dealing in abstract generalities. The section comparing and contrasting U.S. and Latin America has some truth to it (as I have seen first hand living here in Peru, and dealing with/hearing stories about the bureaucracy). It will offend any radicals who think the whole difference between the U.S. and Latin America stems from the fact that the former exploits the latter. That's not true, but North is too facile with the emphasis on efficient/corrupt institutions and not enough emphasis on gunboat diplomacy, Monroe Doctrine, CIA covert operations, et cetera.
