Next year we can pair this with "And Tango Makes Three" on our banned books display! Bailey is a boy who dreams about amazing, beautiful dresses but his mom, dad, and brother tell her (Bailey is called "she" throughout the text) that "You're a boy. Boys don't wear dresses!" Luckily Bailey meets an older neighbor girl who is more understanding. I know this is an issue that comes up for parents; one of the nannies who brings a 3 year old boy to story time told me his dad wouldn't let him dress up as a butterfly for Halloween since that was a "girl's costume". But this goes beyond a boy who wants to wear dresses: Bailey identifies as a girl. I think this will be a great find for some families, and cause confusion for other's who stumble upon this on the picture book shelves.

Really don't know how to rate it... It has been in no way pleasant, as the book is about how ugly the humanity is. And the author not only says it, but also shows us numerous examples of repelling human nature. It seems that according to the narrator a human life is nothing but a pathetic short journey from birth to death filled with fears, complexes and lust. The thing which I can't understand is why I has read it till the end. Part of the book consists in long scintific descriptions of different biological, zoological, physical, psychological and social phenomena expressed in purely scientific terms. The other half is easier to understand... But sometimes I hoped I didn't understand. This second part mostly consists of scences of sex and violance in their most hideous forms. What does the author want to tell us with all this? I have no idea. But there was something (and I still don't know what this something is) that made me keep reading it. There was something masochistic in it. If the author's aim was only to show how ugly a human life is then it didn't worth so many words. And if there is something else... well, I could not see it.

This book re-tells in great detail the story of Aron Ralston, who was forced to cut off his own arm to survive after a canyoneering accident near Moab, Utah. It's a very up close view of a man's struggle for life and being forced to come to an enormous decision such as cutting off a limb. I really appreciated the lessons and slightly new point of view that I received from this novel. The first hand account of the events is chilling and quite disturbing at some parts. While reading the book, I got really bored with the long interludes of memories in between the action. I started to skip those chapters and just stick with Aron during his struggles in Blue John Canyon. So I only truly read about half of the book. The description of the amputation and other gory parts had me almost passing out, so I skipped those as well. Struggling through my horror, I managed to get a lot out of this book. Small amounts of strong language (I don't blame him) and very vivid descriptions of gruesome events are in this novel. But I really recommend it. It helped me understand some more about the human drive for life and made me think about what I would do in that situation.

Good book if you have any experience with Patagonia in Argentina or Chile. Incredible history of the area and well researched. I would probably have given it a 3 1/2 stars only because it's a book that is only interesting to a more specific audience. The history and his journey keep the book going, but depending on Chatwins tangent the reader can be left behind.

How is it possible that I have been a Bunny as long as I have, and never read these books. There is something wrong with me. I now desperately want to be Bunnicula for Halloween. I need an awesome shaggy dog with an Adidas in his mouth, and a sassy cat reading a big thick book. I need to get my hands on the rest of these. So awesome.

All the negative reviews seem to want this book to be something other than it is: if you know a lot about baseball or New York politics, this isn't for you, as it is aimed at a casual interest reader who isn't an expert in either; if you want one, cohesive narrative, this isn't for you, as it jumps between mayoral elections, baseball, an Rupert Murdoch. I'm loving it because a)I don't know much about any of those three things, but I'm interested in all of them and b)I'm not interested in any one of them enough to want a 400 page book on them alone, so the jumping about keeps me engaged. I think this book pulls off the jugling act just right.

"Happy [reviews] are all alike..." Normally, that's true. This book is an exception. The eponymous Polysyllabic Spree, a cult-like editorial organization, forbade Nick Hornby from being too critical of books he reviewed. Occasionally he can’t help himself, in which cases the titles and authors of the books are dutifully expunged. The majority of the time we are left with a series of thoughtful, compelling and very positive essays chronicling Nick Hornby’s reading habits. You may never get around to actually reading the books that are reviewed here, but at least while you're reading Nick Hornby's infectious description of them, you will sure want to.
