La produzione prolifica di Italo Calvino, nel 1979, ha partorito 'Se una notte d'inverno un viaggiatore'. Scrivere un'opinione, o un riassunto, o una qualsivoglia recensione su questo romanzo presenta un problema ostico. Da dove iniziare? Come descrivere, come dire? Siamo di fronte al prototipo del romanzo ideale. Ideale perché riunisce un tessuto narrativo d'eccellenza, uno stile tipico di un autore che sa scrivere, che è nato per scrivere, dei personaggi che trattengono le caratteristiche di un abitante dei romanzi. Un Lettore, il protagonista è un lettore, viaggia (altrimenti che Viaggiatore sarebbe) attraverso la propria vita che è strettamente intrecciata a dieci inconclusi romanzi che, per una serie di fraintendimenti, furti e ipotesi linguistiche errate, si scambiano uno con l'altro. Nell'intervallo tra questi romanzi il Lettore e la Lettrice vivono un'avventura editoriale tra autori che hanno perso l'ispirazione, traduttori che falsificano e libri proibiti. Come Calvino stesso lo ha definito, è un romanzo sul piacere di leggere, in cui la lettura e la scrittura signoreggiano mostrando la vasta gamma di cose delle quali sono capaci. La capacità di far riflettere, di stringere un sodalizio inscindibile con la vita, di presentare dilemmi che chiedono con tutta forza di essere risolti. Leggere questo romanzo significa pensare mentre si legge ogni singola riga, significa aggrottare le ciglia e andare a ritroso con i dubbi per risolvere i nuovi dubbi proposti. E' un viaggio in cui bisogna stare attenti a puntare il Nord, perché altrimenti si rischia di perdersi e di non ritrovarsi più in mezzo ad incipit, nuovi personaggi. Alcuni passi a me hanno fatto venire la pelle d'oca, riconoscendomi nella Lettrice alla quale quale Calvino ha dato vita tra queste pagine di carta. Se avete bisogno di ricredere nel valore sommo della lettura, allora acquistate 'Se una notte d'inverno un viaggiatore', assicurandovi di eseguire tutte le istruzioni che Calvino vi da nel Capitolo primo.

This is easily one of the best books I have ever read, if not the best. It was captivating and I found it so difficult to put the book down, even for five minutes, and all I wanted to do all day was read. It takes a lot to get genuine emotional reactions out of me, but at several points this book had me laughing or close to tears, and I believe that is one of the marks of a truly great author. George R.R. Martin is one of those rare gifted people who were just born to write: his characters are all so real and layered, complicated and terrifying and it was so easy to invest in them and sympathise with their individual stories and emotions at any given time. The way Martin shifts between different perspectives without it becoming awkward is beyond admirable, and he manages to make each character fascinating and unique. Honestly I could gush about this book all day but instead I'll keep this review short and sweet. This book is pure brilliance, perfect in every way, and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone. It doesn't matter if you like fantasy; this book is just remarkable.
