A co-worker recommended this book, and he acting like it was the given words of the creator of the universe. I read it and I didn't get much out of it. Sure, it's got some good tactics and techniques, but if you want to know how to go to war, read a poker book. The difficulty in this book is converting the practical war tactics to the everyday. It would definitely take some study and application to accomplish this so that you were operating at a subconscious level and not thinking, "Hmm, what would Sun Tzu do?"

This is a difficult book to rate. Some parts I give three stars, but the end, which I thought was the best by far, I'd give a perfect five stars. Yes, it's long and it's work but for the glimpses of pure genius that reveal themselves every once in a while, it is COMPLETELY worth it. There were passages that I found purely exhilarating to read. Not because of anything exciting that was happening in the plot, but because of the language - my God, the language. On several occasions, Bolano manages to fit an entire story into a sentence or a word. And the images he conjures up make it seem as if he's performing nothing less than magic on the reader's mind. I wouldn't recommend this to everyone - especially if you're more a plot heavy reader - but I am very glad that I read this. It was an experience. And one I won't soon forget.

In reading this book, there were times I teared up. Nothing sad, just the power of Zusak's words. There are beautiful books out there, ones that are lovely and I float away in, but Zusak's words make me feel like I'm really living them or writing them myself. That is how connected I feel. I feel like he's in my head or I'm in his and somehow we are laughing together over little things. He writes the exact way that I see things. Maybe it's the poet in me where inanimate objects come to life or the most mundane tasks are turned upside down until they shine. There are those people in life that you just want to shadow for awhile. You are so comfortable and you feel better being in your own skin with them. This book was like coming home for me. Hands down, the man's my favorite author.
