Before I read fantasy I thought it was for lonely frustrated teenage nerds, and I thought the names of characters were stupid, and I thought that the storylines were retarded. But that's just the Robert Jordan books (sorry to those fans.) There ARE good ones out there that don't insult your intelligence and maturity, and this series is another great one. The author of my favorite fantasy series, George R.R. Martin, recommended reading this author while we waited on him to finish his next novel.

First off, let me say that yes, the cover is an overly large portion of why I picked up this book. (I'm a sucker for hot covers. Sue me.) That being said, I saw enough positive reviews on this site to make me leave the store with this book. (Thank you, Good Reads reviewers!) I enjoyed this book immensely, a lot more than I thought I would. It was a wonderful fantasy that has enough realism to it that it doesn't get carried away. Tara is your average, everyday woman. She's a single mother with a successful business. Mick is an attractive athlete who is also happens to be a nice guy. He's not quite as perfect (or as shallow) as the public thinks. His pursuit of Tara starts out as any guy's goal of chasing tail, but evolves from there. Both of these characters are incredibly likable and real. There isn't a constant rolling around in personal anguish which makes this a lighter read. I saw some complaints about the sex scenes from other reviewers. My only problem is the fact that her vocabulary seemed to be limited to the words "f*ck" and "me." A little variety would have been nice, but that's just my opinion. Overall, I highly recommend this book. I will be reading it again.

The story follows four generations of an Indian family during a time period of transition from tradition to modernity, British rule to independence. It's a fascinating time and place, and a nicely written book. It is a little long and the pacing is leisurely, but if that doesn't bother you, it's worth the time.

** spoiler alert ** The Lost Quilter focuses on Joanna North, the runaway slave who stayed with the Bergstrom family and was recaptured and returned to a South Carolina plantation. I listened with rapt attention to the story of Joanna's history and her treatment by members of the Chester and Harper families. Every woman who reads this book will feel her association with Joanna. Some will have "aha" moments, some will have anger moments, some will read with shame, but all will read parts of the book with tears in her eyes. Whether or not you're a quilter, or one who appreciates fine needlework, you'll read "The Lost Quilter" as Jennifer Chiaverini takes the Elm Creek series beyond the "founding mothers" into a history of quilt making during one of the most shameful periods of American history.

The lengths that some people will go to have friends or obtain a husband is seriously insane!

Decent; some overlap with his other books; some good long-term and money management strategies.
