It's been a while since I've read anything by Atwood, but slipping back into her style of writing was pleasurable and comfortable, as much as I found that some of the themes and subjects she touched upon in this were quite disturbing to me. It's less a story than it is a series of memories - of other people, of growing up, of bullying, of being bullied, of loss and of change. There were some parts of it that I reread over and over as I was working my way through the book, especially those parts of the book which dealt with Cordelia; she is in many ways as much the main character in the book as Elaine is, although we never get to see her past a certain point in her life, and we never get to hear her thoughts or see what she thought of that whole period. Atwood handled that very well, I though - showing us one very important character entirely through memory, and pointing to the ways in which the memories of this person could be so very important, even if they mightn't been true reflections of that person at all. It's all told in beautiful prose, with a deft ability at moving backwards and forwards through time and space, a wonderful evocation of society in Canada in the 40s and 50s, and a wryly dark sense of humour.

** spoiler alert ** The first time I read ACO, back in high school, I struggled for the first third (just about wore myself out flipping back and forth between the text and glossery), but the it clicked and I just sank into the language. That's still the main pleasure here - I mean, the story is well worth it, but Alex's rolling nadsat places a layer of beauty over the rape and ultraviolence. Without that, Burgess would have had a hell of a time getting any sympathy for his hooligans. I could sit and discuss ACO for hours, but I also feel like pretty much everything's been said. Which is more desirable - the evil of the individual or the control of the state? I imagine your opinion depends on whether you're putting in the boot or catching it in the yarbles. As a side note, some of the my favorite oi songs reference ACO, but I suspect that lingering association has more to do with the Kubrick vision than simply the novel. final thought: You don't have to love it, but it probably ought to read it. epicdystopia.blogspot.com

At a little over two hundred pages, it's a great achievement that Todd manages to pack as much of the four centuries of Roman Britain that he did into this book. It's very readable, and an excellent primer on the subject if, like me, you need to refresh yourself on one or two key dates or events while prepping for an exam. That said, there are a number of areas in which I felt that Todd was making assumptions which can't be supported by the available evidence, or which seem to have a distinct cultural bias in them. I also wasn't wild about the fact that he consistently referred to the native Britons as 'barbarians.' Surely that is both a label which is only valid from a Roman point-of-view, and one which is no more or less clumsy than simply referring to the inhabitants as 'British'? There are also a number of areas in which the scholarship simply isn't up-to-date, as the book was published in 1981. Anyway, a good introduction to a subject which has a huge bibliography, but not a work which can be relied on to any great extent. Recommended, but with reservations

** spoiler alert ** Speak Laurie Halse Anderson Penguin Group, 1999, 198 pages, $10 High School, Rape, Depression, Emotional Problems ISBN # 0-14-240732-1 I really question my desire to read more of Anderson’s works after reading this text. I think it is overdramatic and anticlimactic. With a few changes, this book could be very helpful to a teen struggling with a type of sexual assault, but I feel like the book is very disempowering for Melinda. Her lack of ability to Speak makes her a weak character in my opinion. It takes 50 plus pages to learn that she is depressed for more than just calling the cops at a party, another 50 pages until you learn a boy is involved, and another 50 to learn really what happened. Knowing that she was raped would have made the story more powerful, because Melinda just seems overly depressed and self-excluding for minimal reasons. I would not highly recommend this text, but I would allow it for free choice reading in my classroom.

Really funny essays about being human in all sorts of places and ways, particularly Tokyo with advice on being engulfed in flames.

For normal parents, this book will make you feel GREAT about your parenting abilities. The complete absurdities of the lifestyles of the super rich Manhattanites in this book made me laugh, but disturbed me because I know there are parents like this all over the country. Made me thankful to be a hands-on parent who actually knows my own children.

The grimly self-important mission of the human race and the Mercatoria collide with the indifferent debauchery of the Dwellers, the most badass civilisation in the cosmos. West wing meets Montey Python. Go!
