I had actually read this book a few years ago, but its reimaging as a TV series by the BBC (and shown in America on HBO) got me back into wanting to read all the books. I had stopped after the first three, but now I want to read them all. I guess this is a bit of a warning, then. Set in Botswana, the book is basically a collection of short stories or vignettes with Precious Ramotswe as the main character. Mma (term of respect like Madame) Ramotswe was luck in that she had a loving father who adored her. Upon his death, he left her his herd of cows in the hopes that she would use the money raised from the herd to do whatever she wanted. She did just that. She left the village she grew up in and moved to a nearby city. It is there that she set up the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, allowing her to be Botswana's first and only lady detective. At first things are quiet even after hiring a well qualified secretary (Mma Mikutsi), but after she takes some minor cases involving cheating husbands, she finds a great deal of interest in her services. Each mystery allows the reader to get a better idea of life in rural Africa, particularly without our biases relating to poverty and hunger. The mysteries are not the high suspense murder mysteries we are so used to, but they are intriguing. Mma Ramotswe has cases involving the finger bone of a child, a cheating husband who went missing after finding God, a doctor who seems well qualified some times while being inept others, and the daughter of a local Indian merchant who seems to be looking for love without her parent's involvement. While the pacing is slow compared to most mysteries, it really works with the style of the stories. The imagery helps the reader feel what it is like to live in Botswana. This is supported by the fact that many of the issues Botswanans face form a backdrop for the stories to be presented on. AIDS, colonial history, and local beliefs all play a role in different points in the tales. This is definitely a great book to curl up with!
