This is the first edition of John Hollinger's seminal Pro Basketball Prospectus/Forecast series, and it's an awesome first entry; every bit as insightful as its baseball counterpart. Hollinger's Player Efficiency Rating (PER) is not perfect as a measure of a player's contributions, but it sure is a lot better than most of what else is out there, and he readily admits its limitations. Hollinger provides useful information about every single player in the league, breaking down his stats and giving a detailed, sometimes funny (like when he calls Michael Olowokandi "the league's biggest fraud") scouting report. Every team section contains an essay on some subject, inspired by the team and its policies/play during the season. This is a must-read for all basketball fans who are looking to appreciate the game on a level beyond watching the ball go in the hoop.

Not really what I was expecting, I found this somewhat self-indulgent and not really that brilliant - I did skim some chunks, esp the LONG letter from his friend Chris. I am slightly suspicious of people who spend their time trying to figure out the meaning of life and their place in it - rather egotistical in my opinion, and really a waste of time as I'm sure the universe will continue on it's way regardless of our thoughts on it (though of course I could be wrong ... I'm sure Tim Allen wouldn't agree!). I guess if you're interested in quantum physics and existentialism you might enjoy this ...

I listened to this as an audio book with my then eight-year-old son (instructing him to overlook the profanity so often served up by Bryson's traveling companion) and we both found it laugh-out-loud delightful. Highly recommended.
