The subtitle for this book sums it up really – My year on a South Sea Island, doing nothing, gaining everything & falling in love. Author Kathy Giuffre travels to Rarotonga with her two young boys. Her mission is to write a book about art in the Pacific, but it is also a means to escape a failed relationship. A mix-up with her accommodation leaves Giuffre with no option but to share a home with an elderly woman (Emily), some “ghosts”, a couple of missionaries and briefly, a bizarre couple from Eastern Europe. Giuffre’s year-long sabbatical enabled her to focus on her children and reassess her life. And in the process, she is seduced by the Island, it’s people and a way of life. A lovely, light, holiday read with a happy ending.

I really appreciate how Riordan keeps the main strand of the story-- Kronos' rising and the forces battling Olympus-- going, while having a completed storyline at the end of each book. This one kept my interest pretty well, but I had a bit of a hard time visualizing the characters and setting at the end. I think it would help if I were more familiar with Greek mythology! (How many kids have become "experts" because of Riordan?!)

I swallowed my pride and read this one. The art history, setting, and quirky facts made it a fun read even though the writing sucked and the characters were even flatter than they were in the movie. Oh, and I'm no longer a Christian because of the profound evidence in this FICTIONAL book (joke).

Hannah takes you to places with dysfunctional families, the Civil War era, and some places that can only be considered an alternate reality with bizarre rules and even more bizarre people. If you want to go for a strange yet strangely pleasurable ride, read this book.
