In Sorrows of Empire, Chalmers, an erudite scholar, outlines the ways in which America is an empire, unprecedented in scope, and compares it with past empires. This has been a common theme in the past decade, with Niall Ferguson's Reluctant Empire being another example. Sorrows of Empire goes into great detail, both with well-cited documentary evidence, and abstract narratives that make it a compelling read.

A good breakdown of the plays, as well as a little history thrown in for context. Nothing in depth, but it's a quick, entertaining read.

Title: Wicked Lovely Author: Melissa Marr Publisher: Harper Teen Publication Date: 2007 Genre: YA Main Themes: Fantasy, Fairy, Magic, Romance, & Pages: 328 Plot: (From the Dust Jacket) "Rule # 3: Don't stare at invisible faeries. Aislinn has always seen fairies. Powerful and dangerous, they walk hidden in the mortal world. Aislinn fears their cruelty-especially if they learned of her sight-and wishes she were as blind to their presence as other teens. Rule #2: Don't speak to invisible faeries. Now faeries are stalking her. One of them, Keenan, who is equal parts terrifying and alluring, is trying to talk to her, asking questions Aislinn is afraid to answer. Rule #1: Don't ever attract their attention. But it's too late. Keenan is the Summer King, who has sought his queen for nine centuries. Without her, summer itself will perish. He is determined that Aislinn will become the Summer Queen at any cost-regardless of her plans or desires. Suddenly none of the rules that have kept Aislinn safe are working anymore, and everything is on the line: her freedom; her best friend, Seth; her life; everything. Faery intrigue, mortal love, and the clash of ancient rules and modern expectations swirl together in Melissa Marr's stunning twenty-first-century faery tale." My sister loaned me this book telling me if I loved Carrie Jone's Need Series and Holly Black's Modern Faery Tale then I would love this series. I obviously just finished Wicked Lovely and I do believe the title explains the book best as it truly was Wicked Lovely! Now that I have read this book I really can't wait to move on the next book. I am glad that I waited to start this series because now it finished and I don't have to wait for the other books. I found the plot line to be deliciously dark and seductive. The story did start a little slow but it was all crucial to the fable. I enjoyed that this adventure was fast paced, suspenseful, and passionate. Wicked Lovely had an interesting twist to the storyline that left you begging for more even after you finished the book...I'm glad the story continues in Ink Exchange. The world she painted out was sinister and original. Her faeries were unique and her own. There was no seelie and unseelie court. Marr's were the winter (dark) and summer (light) court. Completely unlike any other faeries worlds out there the faeries were genuinely of their own kind. . My favorite part of this novel was the characters. You could really feel for each and every one of them. Aislinn also known as Ash was the main character and she is as uneasy as she is fierce and persevering. Throughout the book she was constantly uncertain of the faeries, her best friend, herself, and what she wanted. I was extremely overjoyed when Ash finally figures out what she wanted and how to achieve it. Ash's main love interest was Seth, and he is described as a Goth guy but so much more lies under the surface. You find that he is incredibly sweet and horribly enduring. Keenan is the stubborn and earnest Summer King and there is a terribly tragic love story underlying the current story between him and Donia. It really is heart wrenching. Nonetheless Melissa Marr mastered her characters to where you can truly understand and feel the emotions. I gave this book an A+ as this story was truly captivating and unrelenting. If you have a love for faeries and faery stories this is definitely a book for you as Melissa Marr created a riveting picture and fable that will suck you in and devour you before it ever spits you back out. My Rating: 20/20 Originality: 5 Characters: 5 Plot: 5 Writing: 5

Interesting, yes. Easy reading, yes. Total lack of artistic quality, DEFINATLEY! I put it down and thought, "That was neat." Then I thought about it for a day and decided it was like a twinkie. Satisfying for the moment, but it has no value in the long run and you feel dumb having broken down and eaten it in the first place. Over use of writing tricks and archetypes. I think my friend put it best when he said "it was like the author was trying to have an oragsm on every page".
I think I read this before. Very familiar, and yet I never did the whole series before.

An AMAZINGLY rich narrative. The love experienced between the two could never be topped by the best romance novel out there.

Grabbed this advance reader copy to read aloud in the car on a recent road trip, and liked it enough that I breezed the rest of the way through it when I got home. Way more YA girly-book then my usual reading style, but it was well written and fun to read. It's the story of Laurel, a teenage girl struggling with the transition from homeschooling to public school, who soon finds out she has a much bigger transition to deal with. Also well-placed as the first book in a series; it'll get a lot more exciting and fantastic in future books.

Thank goodness for a totally different paranormal story! So original and fun! I liked that it had a load of investigating and humor to pull the reader along the story. Charley is THE grim reaper, chosen at birth to help those who die pass over to the light. But she also helps solve cases to those who are murdered because she is also a PI. With a spunky assistant named cookie, an uncle and father who are connected to law enforcement and a mysterious entity that is from her past Charley has a lot to work with. Little does she know that the mysterious being following her is a man who gives her all the thrills and chills just by calling her Dutch.. Reyes is such an interesting character I cant wait to know more about him and his connecting to Charley.

Amazing story of survival, optimism, resourcefulness, etc. Very well researched and documented. I enjoy Hildenbrand's style of writing. A ton of facts without reading like a research paper but rather a story. The story itself is a little haunting, at least to me, a mother of 2 boys. If you think of the number of lives lost especially at the beginning due to training accidents, faulty equipment, etc and then think how pilots and air crew were the cream of the crop, I can't but help to mourn the loss of so much potential. Add to that the horrors performed in POW camps and this book really moved me.
