Somehow, I became interested in and purchased this book without realizing it was non-fiction. And I'm not a big non-fiction reader. But I loved this book. I didn't even want to put it down to eat Easter brunch! I enjoyed this book on so many levels. Bibeau's writing is engaging and humorously interwoven with fascinating history. From his taste in beer to his feelings on funnel cakes and his dark and dorky past, he sounds like the kind of guy I'd hang out with. Bibeau's quest is to separate the literary Count Dracula from the Hollywood vampire, which takes him to many unexpected places and unusual situations. I felt that I was right there with him not only because I've been to several of the places and heard stories of some of the people, but because his writing just draws you in. And sometimes, when you find yourself getting really intent on the history, he tosses in something that just makes you snort with laughter. (Or at least I did.) I've already talked about this book to several friends and read passages to my mom, coworkers, and my fiance. I can't think of a single one of my friends who wouldn't enjoy this book.

In my second year at Reading Uni, I was lucky enough to follow a class on the 12th century taught by Malcolm Barber. It made a huge, huge impact on me and my interests and thoughts, and Malcolm Barber is to this day my favourite professor. Therefore I really need to read this book!

An epistolary novel about a 12-year-old Jewish kid from Brooklyn who becomes best friends with a star baseball player in the early 1940s. This is utter pap, but…well, okay, I’m embarrassed to admit that I quite liked it. Joey is one of those impossibly clever and erudite 12-year-olds, and the premise is ridiculous—not just the becoming-best-friends-with-a-ballplayer part, but the fact that Joey and Charlie, the New York Giants’ 3rd baseman, also go on to meet President Roosevelt, Humphrey Bogart, etc. Like I said: ridiculous, and there are shades of Forrest Gump that make me gag. Yet…it’s sweet, and very funny, and Charlie is just the type of character I tend to fall for: someone who puts a lot of effort into appearing brash and tough but is a secret softie. And I have to admit that the all-too-inevitable ending made me cry.

The annotations were a little insulting, to be frank. I don't think most of them added to the book, rather, detracted from it.

From a really different perspective than the usual sci-fi. Fascinating and disturbing.

Once again, the end of a saga, and really sad to see the end. I was a little bit disappointed that she ended up with Edward. I kind of wanted her to go with Jacob, but then I wanted her to go with Edward too. It was kind of a 50/50.
looked like three stars for a while, but wow, it brought back everything from the rotters' club. and add to that some spot on political commentary.

Great mystery. Eerie plot twists that will keep you guessing till the end.

Let me start by saying that Vera Nazarian is very, very good at worldbuilding. It's something I've seen in her other work, too. One of the great things about her writing is that it shows us these worlds. In this case, it's a world without color, a world transformed to shades of gray and silver. As a writer, I was curious to see how Nazarian would describe this place with such a limited palate, but she did an excellent job. I was half-expecting this to be the literary version of black-and-white TV, where everything's about the same, just filtered. Instead, this was a rich, lushly described world, one which seemed more real, thanks to its color-challenged palate. The story itself was strong, following a warrior woman named Ranhe Ylir as she and her companions work to overthrow a siege on the city from the forces of (literal) darkness. Ranhe was a great character. She's got the traditional stoic, loner outlook, but she's much more developed and complex than the average fantasy hero. (I could hear Nazarian's voice speaking through Ranhe when she talked about her vegetarian habits, but that's just because I've seen her write about such things before.) There were places where the story was a bit slow for my taste. I don't know whether this is a reflection of the story itself, or of my own short attention span. At times, Nazarian breaks out of the story to address the reader directly and take us on a tour of her world, and those sections didn't really work for me. Much as I admire and enjoy the worldbuilding, I prefer it to be in the context of action and the characters. Overall though, I enjoyed the book, and would certainly recommend it. It breaks away from traditional fantasy tropes and cliches, which is always nice. The characters and relationships drew me in (though it took me a few pages to remember which one was Elasirr and which was Elasand). Personally, I don't know that I'd be up for taking a concept like a colorless world and turning it into such a richly developed novel, but Nazarian pulled it off. I'll have to go back and read more closely to figure out how she did that.

Intricate plotting is the hallmark of Carter's work. Again, intrigue abounds as the characters move from just post Harlem renaissance to Vietnam activism and White House hi-jinks. Eddie is a keepin it real writer ala Baldwin who becomes a presidential speech writer, but his main goal is to find out what happened to his sister June who disappeared after her involvement with radical terrorists.

Bu kitap bir yıldızı bile hak etmiyor. Hiç mantıklı değil. Ne zaman kaybı.
