In 2009, Loreen Niewenhuis set a challenge for herself to walk around Lake Michigan. She had been a stay-home mother to her two boys, and now that they were grown, she wanted to do something for herself, something that had a definite beginning and ending (unlike housework!). Even though the premise seems to be of a woman's spiritual journey, the focus of this book ends up being mostly about the ecology of the lake, the geology of the region, and the histories of some of the coummunities surrounding the lake. Parts are heartbreaking as she spells out the ecological disasters humans have wrought upon the lake. This prompts a vow from me that the next time Clean Water Action shows up on my caller ID, I will answer the phone. She doesn't do the trek in one unbroken session, so it's also less of an exciting adventure than some people might hope to read. She takes breaks to go home and rejuvenate. She camps a couple of times, but spends most of her nights in hotels. Frankly, I don't blame her. I would do the same. I'd be afraid of camping all by myself in remote campgrounds during the off season. I really enjoyed this book because I, too, have an affinity for Lake Michigan, and think of it as "my" lake. I am very familiar with much of the shore and the communities in Michigan's lower peninsula, so I enjoyed reading about them from her perspective, and her descriptions of shoreline in the UP and Wisconsin have given me new places I want to visit and explore. I'll probably travel there by car, though.

I was not surprised when I learned that Ready Player One was Ernest Cline's first novel, because it reads like the first thing someone has written to share. For many of us, this would have happened in grade school. For Cline, it happened in his thirties. Cline has nothing to say with this book. There is very little substance to the story. The characters are simplistic in their motivations and their relationships. Most of them could probably be described in a single word. The novel is full of references to geek culture, from video games to television to movies to music. Most of the relics that are mentioned come from the 1970s and 1980s, which are justified by the ridiculous plot, but some also come from as late as the 00s. These have no justification. In fact, given that nearly all of his references are simply thrown in there without adding anything to the novel as a whole, it is evident that Cline is simply pandering to an audience. He is encouraging people to buy his book with a cheap sales tactic. Remember all those things you liked as a child? I talk about them! You'll love it! This book was written for those children. Not the adult versions of them, but the child versions of them that lived in the 1980s. It reads very much like a childrens' book, given the empty writing, the shallow plot, and the juvenile characterization. It's essentially a comic book without pictures. One of the many references made in the book is to Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, the 1971 film based on Roald Dahl's book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I guess the book came out too early to be used. Though perhaps it's a testament to Cline's lack of literary culture, I'm not sure. Ready Player One borrows very heavily from Charlie. It's essentially the same story in a futuristic setting. But it's missing everything that made Charlie so great. Cline has replaced Charlie's heart with soulless consumerism. What makes nostalgia valuable is the positive emotions that we feel when we remember them. What makes this book so terrible is that nostalgia was replaced with the feeling of being exploited. My advice is to stay away from this book and find something that makes you feel good instead.
