I have always like Bono's singing and his honesty and this books let's is in on the personal stuff. I'm usually not so into the lives of celebrities, but their stories show that they are human. I really like the parts where he discusses his faith.

This was an excellent book, with Lord of the Rings-style adventures. It was especially good in light of my having traveled to Iceland recently. It was basically about the establishment of the country, and all the adventures leading up to it. The only problem with it was that there were a lot of names to keep track of, and, of course, they were all foreign (no Jims or Bobs or Joes). Also, I'm not quite sure why it's called "Egil's Saga". He was a main character, but not the only one, and he didn't even appear until about halfway through the book. Hmmm...

Schätzung ist kein Sprachkünstler, schreibt aber dennoch besser als 80 Prozent der derzeitigen Thriller-Autoren, finde ich. Was er aber unglaublich gut versteht, ist, aktuelle Politik, Ökologie, Techniken etc. in eine Zukunft weiter zu spinnen und dabei glaubwürdig zu bleiben. Und zudem hält er die Spannung so gut wie immer aufrecht, zum einen actionreiche Spannung, zum anderen aber auch "informative" Spannung.

Creating a metaphor is probably one of the great challenges a writer can face. In this day and age, most of all the books written are just new (and sometimes interesting) perspectives on some already stated literary metaphor. And then Saramago did just that: he created a really band new metaphor on the world today, a vision that is pessimistic, but still believes in the inner eye of the human soul. Blind in our reason to all the values that made the human culture and civilization, only in our most basic and human emotions can we find salvation. Is Saramago a religious writer that doesn't believe in god?

Powerful stuff. I continue to believe good historical fiction can often make history more accessible than other history books, biography, or memoir. I cried at the end. I particularly liked the timing of the events in the book. It is an effective surprise when you think you're still in exposition, but suddenly the characters are confronted with the Holocaust. The small tragedy of that timing helps drive the suffering home as much as the more blatant killing and cruelty. In also liked the theme of remembering with the mystical plot device. Good book.
