Maybe I shouldn't base my review on excerpts... It's just never appealed to me.

pretty much hilarious. "a plague of tics" was absolutely priceless. i sat in bed laughing out loud to myself like an idiot. but there are also some really sweet sad moments, and some rather harrowing experiences. i often found myself wondering why he did so much hitchhiking when he had already had several bad experiences.....there were also some weird sort of "cider house rules" parts of the book... oh, and the part about the culprit who keeps wiping their ass on the fudge colored towels is totally hysterical, but also f'd up.

I wanna give this more than three but less than four. Somewhat scary and interesting characters. The Surgeon, dare I say it, was almost fascinating as a killer. He was creepy and gave an illusion of sanity in a Hannibal Lector sort of way. I'm interested in the next installment.

I dearly love this book. My grandmother read it to me as a child, and we have handed it down two more generations. These stories are really fun, and can be used as teaching tools. Two of my little great nieces are reading my only copy of it. Their mother, my niece, came and asked for all of the books for children that she had read at her grandmother's house while growing up. That was my mother's house. It was hard to see them go, but I am glad I gave them to my nieces.

Manages to be fantastical while extraordinarily realistic, historical but pertinent, and Chabon has the all time best vocabulary of a writer ever.

I had to read this in college and breezed right through it. It's not written like a text book and you really grasp the concept of miscommunication. I like it so much i didn't sell it back.

I was impressed by the deep level of understanding of Dostoevsky's character Coetzee demonstrated in this book. Coetzee also demonstrates understanding of Dostoevsky's writing style - by imitating it in this piece.

I finished this book quite quickly as well, and it was a good read. The book is different from what I've read before, both in style, form and content, but essentially it's a story of a man being chased while falling in love. So it's not that original or weird, hence I liked it more (I don't like overly pretentious books!). Kind of weird ending but overall I'd recommend it.

Read half of this book - just couldn't get into it. The characters were shallow and there wasn't anyone I cared about.
