I reluctantly placed this on my "food" shelf. It is a chef memoir, but so, so much more. A really wonderful book from a lovely author. She shares so much of herself so bravely in this.

I like Victoria Alexander as an author. She has a clean writing style. Her plots are well-constructed, her dialogue is always well-done and she knows her time period and history. Here's the problem I have with this book. I simply never liked Felicity. My sympathy was always with Nigel. Yes, he had a lot of control over his own behavior and the scene in which they find themselves in the middle of the book is mostly his fault, but I can't abide a heroine who picks her hero for no apparent reason, puts her head down and just chases. There's nothing likable about Felicity and even at the end, when Nigel threw up his hands and decided that he loved her, I actually felt sorrier for him. And the even sadder thing about the story? For all the sympathy I felt for Nigel? I didn't like him either. So with two pathetic leads, all I'm left with distaste.

Clever. Full of literary and pop-culture references. Good coming of age story, but also much more than that. A little bit conspiracy theory with a Woody Allenesque twist in plot. Lovely. Slightly depressing, but lovely.

I tend to avoid historical romance for a few reasons. Once in awhile I get lured into one - which was the case here. I heart Katie MacAlister and will read her grocery list if she were to publish it. This was a fun book with a lot of crazy and a lot of misunderstandings and just enough danger to make the pages turn a little quicker at the end. Really fun. I did find Gillian's "Unfortunate Habit" irritating after about one chapter I have to say. (Her "Unfortunate Habit" is speaking her thoughts aloud instead of just thinking them.) It wasn't so distracting that I couldn't read the book - but it did make me do a mental eye-roll after awhile. I think that is my only real complaint though. I even got over my aversion to books that refer to the ton since it was puked up in sentence one of this book. I am really happy to have the next book in this series in my hot little hands already!

The idea of the plot in this book was intriguing and kind of scary (what would have happened if America had not become involved in WWII), but the execution was not as good as I hoped. The story is fairly interesting, and the characters are well-developed, but it was just missing something. I think the story moved too slowly and there was not enough dynamic change to most of the characters - it felt like plot elements and conflicts began to repeat after a while rather than progressing. It was ok, but not one of my favorites.

Holy Moly! Have other people read this???? They should. The Holocaust was disgusting and the wide breadth of prisoners is astonishing. How does Pahor make 14 months feel like an eternity? So many holocaust stories involve the narrator just barely surviving -- even as liberation is coming. Imagine being so close and so close to death. Great book. THANK YOU, DALKEY! I picked this up on a whim.
