My 8-year-old son LOVED these books. We have a competition going - he's going to see if he can read/write the 4th book before I read the first three in the series. He told me they are "boy funny." Now I know what that means! Update - he took the books back from me so that he could reread them :-)

I borrowed this book from my sister and loved it. Great storyline mixed in with African Folklore. Very imaginative, but not overboard. I really loved the characters and the ending was perfect. Makes you think about life, attitudes, happiness, and belief systems.

Because of the black southern dialect Hurston used in "Their Eyes Were Watching God" it took me many pages to get into it; it was not an easy read, but ultimately I really liked and appreciated it. I found that by slowing down my reading pace a little to "hear it" and to visualize the rich description in my mind, Janie, Logan, Joe Starks, Tea Cake, Phoebe, and the rest of the characters became alive for me. Hurston's writing so captures the essence of life in the south for blacks during the time period, and most importantly, I cared about Janie; what a wonderful heroine she is--through three marriages, obstacles and hardship Janie learns about herself, evolves and understands her place in the world.

Oh my gosh. This book was so engaging and it was one I just couldn't stop reading. I kept feeling depressed but also hopeful. So struck by the resiliency of mankind. It was very believable in a haunting way.

"Agamemnon" deals with the treacherous murder of King Agamemnon, just returned from the Trojan war, at the hands of his wife, Clytemnestra, and his brother (who had an affair with his wife and coveted the throne). "The Libation Bearers" brings karmic and bloody retribution upon Clytemnestra at the hands of her only son, Orestes, avenging the death of his father. "The Eumenides" deals with Orestes flight from 'the furies,' demon-like creatures who are hellbent on exacting justice for the unforgivable sin of matricide, with a climax of Orestes appealing for mercy and clemency from the gods of Olympus for his "crime." A fascinating read with such descriptions that one cannot help but imagine the scenes that take place. Highly recommended!
