This was the most engrossing book I've read in a long time. The wife picked it up for me because it was written by Bill Bryson who normally writes travel prose. There is no reason why this shouldn't be on every college or even high school reading list. It is the ideal example of how to engage students by making learning fun and interesting. Similar to Teach for America, perhaps we should be tapping resources from outside the educational space to write our textbooks?

awesome book. The kid is annoying at times, but not so much that it made me like the book any less. so interesting how tragedies affect each of us differently...and our ways of dealing with them...and the good that might come of them. i recommend it.

I especially liked all the kissing talk. The beige phrase -- but I can't remember it now. What else? The poem that mentions Belva Davis. (thank you -- you fill my sad soul cracks that call out for nostalgia) the garage sale poem. the kicker lines of many poems. and all of the kissing talk. (so nice i mention twice) (more later - hopefully) when I have the book in front of me.

Really, really great book. It was very interesting to read a book about WWII from the German side. I also liked the point of view from which it was narrated. Pretty different from what I'm used to but it was very fun to read.

This is a classic, and can be very useful as long as one doesn't get too literal about these things. I find that sometimes people in the "new age" community use this kind of information to judge and define rather than to support themselves or others with possible interpretations.

It aveils how the ones who cant and dont want to adappt to the land, as they refuse to belong to it but want to possess it will become offenders....and turn to aggressivity in front of what they don't understand. Very realistic and moving.

one of the better books i have read, in the past few years. deals with issues of identity and mortality in the vainness of 80s nyc. can tell this was influenced by this side of paradise and that eggers definitely was influenced by this in writing you shall know our velocity! as main character looks to escape/ find self through an exhaustive yet exciting journey of all things excess. others seemed not to have liked the ending; though it was somewhat anticipated and easy, i thought it was well done and makes you reevaluate the motivating factors behind one's decisions, no matter how despicable they may at first appear. read if you enjoy: -themes of identity in world, in family, of self; excess vs value; journey as necessary to self discovery -cocaine or stories about it -imagining yourself as a copy editor at a magazine similar to vanity fair, harpers, etc. and get to date models as a result -contemporary fiction that does challenge your mind
