This book is an amazing achievement. Centered around one Vermeer painting, the book retraces the lives the painting touched--from modern day to its creation--and takes the reader on a remarkable journey, painting a perfect picture of each moment in time. I was particularly struck by the level of detail the author incorporates into each story. The amount of research Ms. Vreeland must have done to create this book is awe-inspiring, and yet it never feels like she was merely reciting facts or including details just because she had done the research. From the mixing of Vermeer's paints, to the workings of a Dutch windmill, to the tragic history of the Jews in The Netherlands, the author fills each segment of the novel with rich authenticity and depth of emotion. Ironically, the one phony thing about the book is the Vermeer painting it's centered around--but then, I suppose the ultimate fate of the painting made it necessary for it to be an invented Vermeer. I felt as if I had been on a trip through another world after I finished this book and I will never forget how the author shows the reader, as we look through Vermeer's eyes and through the eyes of the painting's owners, to look for beauty in commonplace things.

A Duty to the Dead is book one in the Bess Crawford series by Charles Todd. I actually read Book Two before Book One which you can do without getting lost between the stories. Bess Crawford is a British nurse aboard the hospital transport ship Britannic in 1916 when the ship hits a mine and sinks. Bess sustains a broken arm made much more serious by assisting in the rescue of one of her fellow nurses. That, plus having to wait for some time to receive good medical treatment, made the break much more serious and therefore very slow to heal. Because she cannot return to duty quickly Bess decides that she can't put off any longer making good on the promise she had made on a previous voyage to Arthur Graham before he died. Arthur had requested that Bess personally deliver a message to one of his brothers at his home in the small village of Owlhurst in Kent. The message....."Tell Jonathan I lied. I did it for Mother's sake. But it has to be set right." Bess goes to Owlhurst to meet Arthur's family and discovers that Authur's half-brother has been locked away in an asylum because of a grisly murder he committed when he was 14 years old. The more people Bess meets the more unsure she becomes about exactly what Arthur Graham's message meant and whether his brother Jonathan intends to do anything about Arthur's request. The descriptions of the settings aboard ship, during the rescue, and then in both London and Kent are first rate. The characters are all very well developed, from Bess right down to her landlady. Bess Crawford is well portrayed as a woman of 1916, a woman willing to take her place in society to do her very best to help along the war effort. She was a very enjoyable character for me to read about, using her intellect to reason her way through the problems she was facing, trying to make sense of events which had happened so many years before but which still effected so many lives. Can't wait to see what comes next in this series! I really enjoying following Bess. I've picked up the first 3 books in the Ian Rutlidge series written by Charles Todd and can't wait to start reading them.

Re-Read from August 03 to August 11, 2014 Still an amazing read! Read from June 09 to July 06, 2010 What an INCREDIBLE book! It's going to take me a while to digest it, but, WOW!!! I got so involved in this book that I felt physically stressed at times during stresses among the characters. I hated having to pause the audiobook because I was so into it. Davina Porter, the narrator, is amazing at different character voices. Male, female, Scottish, English, French; she does it all! Outlander is not an easy read. There are some tough, emotional scenes and times when I wanted to rant about how unfair the situation for Claire or Jaime were. One of my favorite (and frequently used!) quotes? "Jamie made a 'Scottish noise'." You totally know what Gabaldon means! And yeah, Jamie is now very high on my heroes list!!! edited to add: Best link: Why Men aren't like Jamie Fraser

See lots of parallels between this book and Obasan, The Disappeared, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, and so many other books about surviving war and prejudice - book for good high school essays or just an interesting read.

True story of an amazing woman who walks across the country in 1896. Really enjoyed the historical aspect. Tragic ending, which made me sad, but what made me the most sad was that the family destroyed hundreds of pages of manuscript that this woman had written about her family. I would highly recommend. Easy read.

Very good book, tells a very graphic history that not many people have heard about WWII. I enjoyed it.

This book was unsatisfying on many levels. The passivity of the characters might have something to do with it.
