A fine book on its own, but lacking as a companion to The Giver. It seems pale in comparison.

I picked this book up on a whim. The blurb looked a little dodgy but I thought worth a go. For most of the book I was entertained. It would be perfect for younger readers as it is not very sophisticated in terms of writing style. There were some great stages in the book where Trellas attitude and strength of will, did remind me of Katniss (The Hunger Games). But that is where the comparison ends. Towards the end I was hugely disappointed in the reveal as to what world they were living in. Very anti-climactic. Not sure if I will go on to read the next one.

The book was good, but better I think if you knew who the people that he was speaking about. Just a bit before my time, I'm afraid. Nice perspective of a legend.

This isn't even my very favorite Bellairs, and it's still fab. I think I like the House with a Clock in its Walls, or the one about the secret abandoned railway better, but they are all so enjoyable. Always a great mix of mystery, adventure, and pre-Harry Potter magic.

This is really a very enjoyable adult fairy tale. If you're looking to recapture the magic you felt when you read your first fairy tale as a child, I would recommend this book.

This book was interesting, assuming the facts were right. But it seemed like what Crichton really wanted to do was write a position paper on climate change. But instead he made it into a novel, where the dialog comes out as a position paper on climate change. Kind of heavy-handed.

Well, I've put off reading this for so long, because I hate to run out of books by my favorite authors. Within 50 pages, I was totally hooked and was so glad to be reminded why I love Irving. The last few I've read (Widow..., Fourth Hand, Until I Find You) weren't as satisfying as the "classics" (Hotel, Garp & Owen Meany). But Cider House was so satisfying on so many levels and I think competes with Meany as my favorite. If there was any downside for me, it's that I felt the ending was somewhat inevitable, and I didn't necessarily need all of the intricacies of the "15 Years Later" section. But getting there was still a wonderful journey, full of the unforgettable characters and often hilarious, frequently moving, always compelling experiences they endure. Dr. Larch may be one of Irving's greatest creations. And it's the mark of a great book for me if I can see myself as, or want to be, one of the characters, which is how I felt about Homer Wells. I was very sad for this book to end. Now if I can only get through Son of the Circus (which I've given up on once before!).
