Walter M. Miller committed suicide before completing his sequel to his only other novel, A CANTICLE FOR LEIBOWITZ. Terry Bisson was hired to edit and finish the book from Miller's outline. That hybrid became SAINT LEIBOWITZ AND THE WILD HORSE WOMAN. This novel is more of a 'midquel', rather than sequel, because its events take place 80 years after CANTICLE's part two, called "Fiat Lux" (c. 3254 AD, and 600 years before CANTICLE's part three. SAINT LEIBOWITZ reminded me very much of Herbert's DUNE. They are both sprawling novels dealing with the political machinations of both Church and State, and they both center on the manipulations of the mysterious, isolated, less-civilized nomadic peoples whose loyalties will tip the balance of power. It is finely characterized and the battles and various landscapes are sufficiently detailed to place you within the action and setting without creating a leaden narrative. I listened to BOOKS ON TAPE's audio version narrated by Jonathan Marosz. He handled the character voices well, but Miller's names for the MANY characters in the novel became confused in my ears-head because of similarity in sound. It would be easier to distinguish on the written page. Recommended for fans of Miller & CANTICLE.

Good story line and plot, but drags on a bit.

The second Drinkwater edition carries our hero twenty years after the affairs of the first volume. Drinkwater is first lieutenant on a small cutter that tangles with a French provocateur and ends with the battle of Camperdown as viewed from the deck of a very small cutter. Again, fabulous characterization, gruesome action, and dark nuance.

a story about living in Montana, growing up on the Crow reservation, playing high school basketball, alcoholism, etc. etc...all non-fiction and a little bit heavy, but very readable.

Well, I don't really write reviews. Most of the time I read a book,I either like it or don't,then i move on to the next book. That was the general pattern of my reading until now. After reading Wicked Lovely I felt compelled to write a review on this book coz I won't get a good, sound nights sleep until i write it. So,coming directly to the point,Wicked Lovely was the WORST BOOK I'hv read till date.Wicked Lovely is far far from anything LOVELY.The story was completely out of the world (even for the Fairy world),it doesn't have any simple sense of logic.I admit,I really wanted to like this book but it gave me nothing but 3 hours of torture.Even the 1 star i'm giving is b'coz 1)the only thing i liked in the book was the charecter of seth and 2)thanks to wicked Lovely now I know what kind of books I m gonn avoid in future. Lastly,I won't recommend this book even to my enemy.(really i'm not that heartless).Huuuusssshhhh...now that it's all out I'M gonna get some beauty sleep.

So sad ... but equally interesting and frustrating to read about a character who is so flawed.

Not a very pretty picture of some of the Kennedys, especially Rose. This was an enjoyable read, but not a particulary happy one.

The Paper Eater. Another inventive psychological thriller cum black comedy cum dystopia from Liz Jensen. This time it’s a combination of an isolated society managed by corporate software, a small-time fraudster convicted of a serious crime he didn’t do, a cast of female characters suffering from a variety of misdiagnosed psychological issues, an imaginary family full of incestuous undercurrents, and a cell-mate uneducated in the game of chess. Oh, not forgetting, the title of the book which comes from the central character’s displacement behaviour/bad habit of chewing paper to make home-made papier mache. There is a love story to go with all of this as well. You simply cannot accuse Jensen of having a poor imagination! In comparison to my review of Egg Dancing, I found this book to be of the right length, and didn’t feel short changed by the story’s conclusion. A sparky read, with plenty of laser-guided gibes at the nonsense of corporate life.

I really give this 3 1/2 stars. Simply a sad tale- well written. Half way thru the book it finally dawned on me who all the players were and it all came together. But sad- makes me wish for a better world.
