** spoiler alert ** This book has many, many problems: enough to make it only the second book that I've not been able to finish. In no particular order: 1. Even though I've read the prequels, I had a hard time keeping up with all of the characters in this book. There are literally dozens, each with their own piece of the story to tell. Those storylines connect them to the main story, but every few pages (sometimes not even that) is a different character/different story perspective, so the clarity and continuity are non-existent. It makes for a choppy, non-linear read. 2. There is never a break in action. Someone is either being murdered or attacked. No lulls at all. This is exhausting. 3. There is no real romance. I made it to page 203 without anything more than 'long, lingering glances' in which both the H/h feel like there is a connection between them, but have too many personal hangups to do anything about it. Of course, this book is about a child trafficking/prostitution ring, so there really shouldn't be any room for romance, but there are so many broken characters, I would have liked to have seen a HEA for someone (I'm told this *does* happen, but I didn't make it through the book in order to experience it). 4. The heroine is annoying. Yes, she's been through hell. Yes, she has every reason to feel badly about her past and what she did/didn't do. However, this self-hatred is expressed every time the character talks to anyone or has internal dialogue; she ends up being both self-deprecating and self-loathing, neither in a charming manner, thus, she comes across as whiny with no real redeeming qualities. Her standoffish manner is supposed to hide a vulnerability, but it really just made her seem like a bitch. 5. I'm sure the Hero would be an amazing man, given the right circumstances, but throughout the entire first half of the book (I made it to page 203 before giving up) he is working on a child trafficking/pornography case with multiple victims both dead and exploited, so all we really get to see is how stressed out and burned out he is. That he also has to deal with an attraction to the h made me feel bad for him: she's not worth it. To sum it up: don't bother with this book. It's convoluted and unnecessary. But it is also a blip. Karen Rose usually writes intelligently, with emotion and guts. Every other book I've read of hers is top-notch, and hopefully her next book will redeem her.

One of my favorite books is The Good Earth so I was interested to learn about it's author Pearl Buck. Unfortunetley, I was dissapointed with this biography. I didn't like the author's writting style or the tone she brought to the book. The story itself was depressing. Pearl grew up in China as the daughter of poor missionary parents in a time when malaria and other diseases were rampant. Revolution and war plauged China during Pearl's time there. Knowledge of Pearl's life gave me insight into her writing, but I am not sure I will read more of her work.

I finished reading Fire on the Horizon last night and in my attempt to sum up the events surrounding the sinking of the oil rig Deepwater Horizon I’ve chosen “complicated.” Don’t read that as my take on the book itself; no, this single word is aimed at undertaking the nearly impossible task of drilling some 3+ miles under the sea floor looking for oil all without “something” going wrong. Fire on the Horizon is an awesome journey following the birth, and eventual death, of the oil rig Deepwater Horizon; it explores the complexities of finding, drilling, and extracting oil all while giving the reader a look into the lives of those who made/make it possible. John Konrad and Tom Shroder masterfully pull you inside the lives of the rig workers and their sacrifices to give you a personal understanding of how the Deepwater Horizon operated. I admit my knowledge prior to- and even since- 20 April 2010, when the Deepwater Horizon caught fire, of how an oil rig works and its dangers eluded me. My positions in the Coast Guard thus far hadn’t afforded me the opportunity to go the path of understanding the “how” and “why” of a rig. Thus this book could be looked at as an introductory text-book of sort. The text is laden with just enough technical geekery to let you understand the drilling world without getting into the weeds and losing the reader. I highly recommend this for anyone looking to better understand not only why the Deepwater Horizon sank but to also view the intricacies that go into each drilling operation.

I was a little hesitant with this book because I thought it would be a lot like Meg Cabot's book. I am glad that I gave it a chance because they are nothing alike, and I loved this book. When they finally revealed why Becks went with Cole into the Everneath, I was a little miffed that she was so easily swayed. But then again if I put myself in her place I would have done the same thing. I will absolutely read this again and again

I'm really just skimming this. Although it was not written by Lincoln Center people, it has a very self-congratulatory tone. Mostly I like looking at pictures of people in their youth (like John Goberman) and I'm curious to see if they'll talk about the Mostly Mozart strike of 2002. Honestly, I can't imagine anyone being too interested in this book unless they a)work for Lincoln Center and need language for grant proposals or b)worked for LC and want to reminisce.

I really enjoyed this book. At first, I was skeptical because I had never been a fan for Southern literature. However, this book can really appeal to anyone who loves a good story. Gin Phillips writing both flows and leaves distinct edges. Her writing shows that she knows her characters so well that their lives seem real. This novel is written in a unique way to tell its story. The author gains your interest from the first line, and carries you through the characters lives, and draws the story through each of their own perspectives. Overall, a great story with a unforgetable characters and their complex personal relationships.
