I learned that segue "a smooth transition" is not spelled segway unless it is the two-wheeled, self-balancing electric vehicle. And it is disappointing to learn that "snuck" will eventually be acceptable by all. Really? Sorry, Mr. Hess (my beloved 7th grade English teacher and grammar stickler extraordinaire).

I know that one of the reasons I enjoyed this book was listening to Pat Conroy read this book. I am not always fond of author's reading their own works. Just because you can write does not mean that you can read out loud. However, I believe that Conroy had good training - his mother read to him. This was an enjoyable book, I found parts laugh out loud funny and I learned lots about Conroy's life, why he reads and why he writes. Conroy and I have differing opinions about some of his books, but for good or for bad, I found a few more books that I need to read or reread. I also may have changed my mind about why Conroy writes the books he does. I always believed he is writing to deal with his father, but that is not what Conroy says. I don't want to spoil the book, so you will need to read this and see what you think. I would recommend that you listen. Not only do you get to hear Conroy's words from his own mouth, but there is a short interview at the end of the book on CD.

This series is kind of like wine...the more it ages, the better it gets. Having read all five, I am much more favorably disposed towards this book that I was originally, simply because the overall plot of the series is extremely well done, though only the bare beginnings are seen in this installment. The first in the series is cute, light, and very fun. The concept is wonderful, and Riordan does a good job of bringing us into this world of greek heroes living amongst us! I especially adored the voice of Percy Jackson, who narrates everything in what can only be termed as "Boyspeak" in a very believable way. The characters are not quite fully drawn out, and the plot itself is rather episodic, but definitely a promising book that acts as a great lead in to the rest of the series!

This trilogy covers some of the same material, roughly, that Miller's other Trilogy, the Tropics and Black Spring cover, though these works are more vivid, more chronologically structured, and slightly more conceived. Who knows, if I had read these first, which I would prefer?

Another quick installment of The Real Duchesses of London series by Ms. Kent. While I liked learning more about Annabelle, the token American heiress, I didn't feel as connected to her or Thomas as I did to the previous duchessess featured. I also wanted to know more about how and why Mr. Swatts became involved in the publication of the cartoons. Perhaps these are questions that will be answered as we continue the series. I am most interested to learn more about Elizabeth and am pleased hers will be the next novella (September 2011).
