The conclusion of the His Dark Materials trilogy is perhaps the best book of the three, a tour-de-force that takes us all the way to Heaven, Hell, and beyond. Pullman is at his angriest here, and makes the strongest case yet against the spiritually stifling nature of organized religion (his depiction of "God" is particularly amusing). Some readers hoping for an enormous shebang might be disappointed at the book's resolution, but I have only this to say to them: there's no anticlimax here. The epic that inspired this trilogy climaxed when a woman ate a piece of fruit.

This book was amazing. When I first saw it, I thought it would take forever to read. It was over 800 pages in size 10 font, about as thick as it was wide. I read it in about 5 days. I love the characters, the story and the adventure. This book is truly enjoyable.

Oh this book is just terrific. The prose is so light and airy and flows so beautifully... which all belies the pretty serious things that go on. Written in the late '60s, re-released a few years ago by Thunder's Mouth, this is the story of Bettina Balser, an upper-middle-class housewife who is freaking out about the stifling life she finds herself in the thick of. The characters (her husband, his "classy" friends, the housekeeper, their children and neighbors) are perfectly drawn, and the dialogue is impeccable. This story is wholly believable, and fantastically put together. Highly, highly recommended. *** Update. You know, this book has really stuck in my head since I recently finished it. And I'm actually pretty unhappy (in retrospect) about the ending. I don't want to ruin it, though this isn't really that kind of book, but basically, everything just gets tied up in a far too terrific way. Bettina and her husband have been in a silent, seething fight for months, the kind of fight that encompases their entire lives, really, where neither would even consider backing down, because it would be anathema to even think that they might be at fault. And but then there's this crazy climax scene where finally everything comes out, kind of, and hubby just breaks down. Not only does he back down, but he completely puts the whole thing on himself, takes responsibility for all the awfulness that they've both been going through. Not that I think he was wrong to do so (obvs, the book is from Bettina's POV, so we're likely going to side with her), but it's almost too wonderful to have him go through such a change of heart like that. It's like a fantasy ending, the kind of resolution that people who happen to be in sometimes-contentious relationships (no one I know, of course) only dream of. Which just made me sadder and sadder the more I've been thinking about it, that Sue Kaufman either just took the happily-ever-after, easy way out, or was so depressed by her own situation (sorry, I read most everything as if it's autobiographically based) that she had to dream up an if-only and put it together, maybe as something to hold up as a beacon of hope. I still like the book immensely, but I sorta want to retract my earlier rapturous proclamation of its believability and all that.

Raised by ghost!

Although a simple story line, this book travels deep within the characters to separate the journeys of their lives from the events that take place. This book shows that everything happens for a reason, and that we must always be aware of the world around us, or else we will surely miss out on the wonders that it has in store.

I had never heard of this condition before. I still can't quite comprehend it. Very interesting story about a mother and wife who has to learn how to cope with left neglect.

This was an absolute favorite of mine in middle school, which is odd considering I never really liked the open sea. I like the idea of it, though, and I like the politics of a world unto itself as a ship is--I also liked, when I was a kid, the idea of completely bucking what girls or children or whatever category are "supposed" to be, of becoming what makes sense rather than what is proper. Can you tell I was a tomboy in my youth? For this book, though, Avi brilliantly works within first person narrative to show the struggle of having been taught a certain view of the universe and the difficulty of stepping outside of what you have always known. The characters are very well fleshed-out; even the supporting cast around the three or four main players have their own moments of brilliance. The appendices in the back with the list of nautical terms and the diagram of a ship is also pretty cool, because it really is its own language (as are all very involved professions). It's a good adventure yarn, it's a good coming-of-age story that doesn't involve any princes or knights in shining armor, and it's a fast read. Yep, still a fan of this one.
I think the power in this book comes from taking all the poems together as a narrative. Individually, the poems are pretty good, and a couple a really great. I like Rash's imagery, and I think he does a good job bringing mill life to the page, but some of the poems fall a little flat and/or lack punch.
