Before acquiring this book I was not aware of its prodigious length, but given the fact that Wilkie Collins was an intimate friend of Charles Dickens, I should have predicted it. Collins' multi-adjective character descriptions struck me as nearly identical to Dickens', while Collins' description of the asylum and the scant evidence upon which a person could be admitted smacked of Dickens' passionate interest in the deplorable conditions prevalent in the asylums of the day. The characters: The full cast of characters possessed a depth and sincerity which made them believable (although, I admit-with grave disappointment-stereotypical). Their interactions with one another were sometimes hilarious, sometimes explosive, and at all times compelling. I laughed when the culmination of Marian's exasperation with the neurasthenic hypochondriac Mr. Fairlie was to slam his door and assert, "I hope I shattered Mr. Fairlie's nervous system for the rest of the day". I loved the scene in which (view spoiler) Walter Hartright, although commendable for his unfaltering love, his dogged determination, and his admirable sleuthing, was my least favorite character because I found him rather boring and tended to mention his honorable nature just often enough to lead me to suspect 1) he is a mite over-proud of himself or 2) he has a nagging uncertainty that he may not be quite as honorable as he would like to believe. The style: The epistolary style reminded me immediately of Dracula (it really should have reminded me of Bleak House, but I confess Bram Stoker's work came to mind first), but with far more finesse and ingenuity in its execution. Mr. Fairlie is forcefully manipulated into writing his story, Walter Hartright's account describes the gusto with which Fosco writes his, and at one point (view spoiler) The unreliable narratives, in keeping with the character of their respective authors, leads the reader to question the authenticity of nearly everyone's actions and motives-even Walter Hartright's. (view spoiler). The story: it has romance! International intrigue! Scandal! Subterfuge! Spies! Kidnapping! Poisoning! Murder! Harrowing chases on foot, train, and carriage! Questionable activities in the dead of night! Blackmail! Mistaken identities! Secret societies! Was it really 700 pages? I didn't notice.
