Person interviewing OKD: You use space in many inspired and unique ways. Words run together -- "forgoodisthelifeendingfitandfaithfully." Broken apart -- "Hall /-ucinated." Otherwise altered --"thekingmyfather'swrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrack." How do you make these decisions? OKD: How do we make any decisions? I mean, in the same way we/I make any decisions. Logic. Aesthetics. Discretion. Permission. Mood. Feelings. Luck. The same way you pick a pink t-shirt over a blue one. Vodka over gin. Free verse over a sestina. Hopkins/Dickinson/Berrigan over Blake/Whitman/Ashberry. Alaska over France. To dye your hair blonde. To have children. To take a lover. To get a divorce. I meant: To get a divorce. To take a lover.

I love Michael Chabon. Love him. Everyone moderately literate should read Kavalier and Clay. This book was fine, which I consider beneath him. It's a quick read, and entertaining, but don't take it as a good indication of his (outstanding) abilities.

Recommended by Eleventh Stack. Okay, so this person wanders around at night and finds a bookmobile with every book she has ever read on it. She spends the next ten years of her life reading and filling the bookmobile, holding onto the hope of finding it again. Nine years later she meets the bookmobile again and decides to become a librarian. When she meets the bookmobile 12 years later she questions if it was worth it? All that reading? IS it worth it? This book is haunting me in a you can't stop reading can you kind of way. Is it worth it?

I tend to avoid most mysteries that seem to be based on hobbies, crafts, or oddball jobs, because I expect them to be too cutesy. However, I'd heard enough praise of Mary Jane Maffini to be willing to try one of her books. I'm glad I did, because it was well-written and the organizing tips didn't get in the way of a very complicated plot and some engaging characters. The setting, a small town in upstate New York, was nicely drawn (the protagonist even shops at the same supermarket I do, and I know that's accurate). My only real quibble with that was that the town doesn't seem to have a public high school, since most of the characters went to Catholic high school together. Ms. Maffini is Canadian, and I know their system is somewhat different. Otherwise, this book provided a welcome relief from some heavier things I've been reading, and I'll look for more in the series.

To Anyone that is a Boss, Has a Boss, or Will be a Boss, Please read this book. There are some very critical passages about communication between the ranks, that you really need to understand. I know. It's a book about Checklists, but, the Checklists are designed to cause/create communication. Checklists are great. Communication is great. Having a bit of both, well, that's just a winning combination! I thought this was an excellent book. While it seems simple, I really appreciated the stories behind early checklists, and checklists at many levels of complexity and in various kinds of work.
