Stunning! An amazing insite on what it is like in the Middle East from several angles. It really is hard to describe this book. The writing itself may be a little weak at times, but the grip and info makes up for it and vice-versa.

Re-read this in the last couple of days - enjoyed it even more the second time around. I love the complexity of the characters and how they work together to a relationship that works for all of them.

Of course I love it, the third story ("Heir Apparent") is mine -- full of little druidic details and an obvious love of medieval romance literature...with genderswapping masquerades and politics thrown in. The other stories run the gamut of time periods and are all marvelously sexy.

An early Crusie, but very enjoyable.

An amazing story of two women who are inextricably separated by their very different social classes in India. The ending was surprising, but brought both narratives together, which I appreciated. At times this book was heart-breakingly sad, but ultimately it is a beautiful story and the ending is hopeful. Highly recommended!

I really liked this book - I love when stories are told from different perspectives in alternating chapters. This is a great story of self-discovery, friendship, and growing up. I haven't enjoyed a Newbery winner so much since Despereaux.
I really liked Derting's first book and couldn't wait to get my hands on this sequel, but much to my disappointed, I had a horrible time reading it and didn't end up liking the story. I found the characters very one-dimensional. Very reminiscent of Stephanie Meyers. We know one thing about the characters and get hammered on the head with it over and over. The most annoying, being Violet's boyfriend, Jay. He is so perfect and if we are to believe the author, God's gift to women. All females aged 13-86 practically swoon over his perfectness. He is super understanding, super caring and only has eyes for Violet (a la Edward). If that's your thing, then you might enjoy this book. Its not mine. I like my men flawed. Even the protagonist, Violet, was a let down. Instead of running with this power and being realistic, (just like Bella) she is a weak character who is meant to be endearing. I like my female leads to be kick ass and be self reliant. Again, if its your thing... As far as the story goes, instead of expanding on what we learned in the first book and building on it, it was more or less a weak story with a predictable plot and I made myself finish it only so it could count towards my goal and have not been a waste of time. I think the overall theme has merit and a lot of potential, but Im probably not ever going to re-read this book, and I'll be hard pressed to buy any other from this series. I might check it out of the library to see if its improved, but then again, this book made me so mad, I wanted to chuck it against the wall they way I did The Crucible in 10th grade, so don't hold your breath. This reads more like a pg-13 Harlequin Romance, instead of an Urban Fantasy. Plenty of sweaty palms and rapid heart beats and kissing and racing pulses. Maybe you have to be in the mood for it, I was more in the mood for a Psychological thriller/Preternatural mystery kind of thing. Definitely not the book for me, but good luck if you decide to read it.
