Thank god for that - a book written by a woman that I can love. I started it before and got to around page 40 and gave up on it. Then went back to it, wasn't that pushed up to page 40, but after that point there's a magical turnaround. Authorial fact - Flannery O'Connor died of lupus in her early thirties.

I'm relatively new to Beckett, and so my only point of comparison is "Waiting for Godot". Look elsewhere if you want more of the majesty and humor of that work, but "The Lost Ones" does have its own charm. Give Beckett credit, he creates a world of his own, and unpacks it in exhaustive and minute detail. The complex social patterns that develop among the pitiable inhabitants is perhaps of greatest interest. All of this is described in Beckett's characteristically dense prose. Despite being serendipitously timed and thus receiving the Nobel Prize for literature, "The Lost Ones" is not itself a major work. Whether this particular experiment is enjoyable to you is probably a matter of taste, but it does have the advantage of brevity; like a Ramones song, if you don't like it, it'll at least be over before you know it.

I just love this book. I first read it for my one and only English class in college, Modern American Novel. I took the class just because we were going to read Catcher in the Rye, and I wanted to know more about Salinger, the book, his motivation, etc. But we read fabulous books in that class--The Sun Also Rises, Dodsworth, The Hamlet (Faulkner--not so great), The Great Gatsby (amazing)... And this book. I just reread it in the last month, I got so much more out of it. Hemingway wrote this when he was about 26, and you can just feel the disillusionment (he was a member of the Lost Generation, after all) and Hemingway's fear of emasculation, of course. This all became even sharper, for some reason, the last time I read it. But all the reasons it was so great for me 20+ years ago are still there--the wonderful descriptions of bullfighting, of fishing in the Pyrenees, the expat life in Paris. All very rich for a college sophomore, but it never loses its power and charm, and I now want to go to Paris more than ever.

Okay, so he had me at Macallan, but all things considered, this was my favorite read of the year so far -- DESPITE the werewolves, vampires, and the overload of sex, violence, and ridiculous vocabulary. Jake is a fantastically entertaining narrator, willing to look straight at the darkest parts of life and himself and call them like he sees them.

I had seen the movie and loved it, but the book is even better! The City of Fallen Angels (his 2nd book) is just as good, if not better! I highly recommend both of his books. I wish he would write more.

Was macht Marquez so besonders?

Bear V Shark was Chris Bachelder's first novel, U.S.! was his second, and reading them, you can really tell that they were written in that order. U.S.! is much more accomplished, whereas Bear V Shark, while clever, suffers from being far too one-note. It's also more bleak and depressing, eviscerating American culture—which, in a not-too-distant future where televisions no longer turn off, involves a nation that has become obsessed with a virtual fight between the titular animals—without leaving even the shred of hope or optimism U.S.! offered. Plus, the (intentional) errors in fact that all the characters spout (a Gordian knot is referred to throughout as a guardian knot, for example) drove me *insane*. I can't stand that amount of dumb! Not even in the cause of satire! However, it is very amusing to picture Stephen Colbert reading this novel. I'm thinking audio book?

I love these books. Yes, the main character is shallow and vain and quite self-absorbed, but most teenage girls are to a certain extent, right? I love that despite these things, Georgia remains a lovable character, and we get to see the chinks in her armour, as it were. She really does love her parents, even though most of the time they annoy her half to death and do things she finds appalling. You didn't feel like that as a teenager?! I did! She cares about her friends. She makes mistakes that she regrets. And what makes these books so fun is that they are almost like the diary of the class clown...how many books have you read like that? It is a familiar yet unique perspective, in my opinion. I love them and will continue to love them. If you were once a teenage girl, don't take life incredibly seriously, and can find the humor in funny thingositys, you will probably enjoy these, too.

Truly amazing that this journalist actually lived as much history as he did, meeting everyone from Golda Meir to the Dalai Lama. Really well written and interesting reading, even some of the stories I'd never heard about - the death row inmate interviews at the beginning of the book were pretty compelling.

In contrast to Kawabata, Abe's work tends toward the Existential and is sharply modern. This book has a well-written discussion of the symbolism attached to condom use, and you probably will never want to have sex on the beach after reading it. Sand gets everywhere. But in a deeper sense, it's an interesting book about the niches we all find for ourselves and how we come to accept them.
