fascinating to reread as an adult. i love hazel, i love pipkin and fiver, and i really love the greek mythology parallels. the villain, the way hazel realizes to survive you have to do new things. the way the rabbits learn to survive, how to adapt. it's really a remarkable work, and i am glad to see it on my shelf and pick it up to reread. i would love to go to england and actually see the landscape. trying to figure out how big the distances are in the book is a little confusing. especially now that i have so many rabbits in my care at work, it was fun to read.

I have only read Julia Alvarez's adult fiction before and I was glad (though not surprised) to see that she translates quite well to older kids and young adult literature. The story is of a young girl and her family living in the times of the Trujillo regime in the Dominican Republic. The reader has a very intimate positioning alongside the main character's life. The moods are sometimes incongruent with what is happening politically, but this is quite typical of a child's perception of things. A quick read with a little something for every reader.

I was really disappointed in this book, primarily because it didn't really tell you anything about rats, only the authors lame observations during his year sitting in an alley in NYC. The most annoying thing (other than not reading many gross and disturbing rat stories) was that the author likened himself to Thoreau on Walden pond...several times. Dude, you are totally NOT Thoreau.

A touch of the Davinci Code, though not as gripping. However, it makes for a nice relaxing read. I went through it while on holiday and I enjoyed it quite a bit. The development of characters and the mixing of facts with the author's imagination sets a great intrigue of what "the Great Devine" actually may turn out to be. Also, the settings throughout Europe, specially the scenery descriptions are quite alluring and make the story come alive a lot more. If you want a book that helps you break away from your everyday routine, this is a good option.

I absolutely found this book captivating. It is definitely a tragic beginning to this woman's life but her true self carries her through. I would love to know more of her story and that is why I want to read the adult version of the book(Falling Leaves). This book was definitely a Cinderella story with a mean stepmother, a father that wasn't there for her, fairy godmothers that believed in that she was a good child and very mean siblings and step-siblings. The only thing that it lacked was a prince charming. I hope that changed once she got older because the book ends while she is still fairly young. I loved the fact that she never gave up on herself. She is a wonderful writer pulling you through the book without realizing it.

I enjoyed hearing this story from the perspective of those directly involved: Ed, Lois and Elizabeth Smart. I read it to satisfy my curiosity about what really happened with this news story. It's not a masterpiece of a book as much as a statement from the Smarts about their experiences. After finishing the book I gained added respect for this family and learned a little about the need for victims to have more rights in our justice system. I had never really thought about the concept that the Constitution protects a criminal's rights, but does little to protect the victim's rights.
