It broke my heart to read this book, but I consider it the most important book I've read so far this year. The girls are commercially sexually exploited children and teenagers in the United States. They are trafficked for drugs and other commodities for their pimps. They are physically abused - tied up, poorly nourished, forced users of drugs and alcohol and sold to men. The author was herself such a victim and she traces her growth to survivor and leader as she works with the girls in the agency she established in New York City, Girls Educational and Mentoring Services (GEMS). The girls successfully challenged and changed the state law of New York to decriminalize the girls and provide healing services to them instead. New York was the first state to make this change, but hopefully others will follow.

One of my favorite books. I keep waiting for DeWitt to write another, but I would almost be afraid to read it, it seems so hard to match the level of this one.

On a technicality, this edition is marked down for rearranging the original order. Lewis may be quoted as saying that he wanted them placed into chronological order (i.e., The Magician's Nephew first because it occurs before LWW), but if he did, it must've been after senility hit him. It's ridiculous and it causes faults and contradictions. The "flashback" aspect was one of my favorite things in the original order.

Back in the old days people actually thought love was a good thing. They thought that it was powerful and could overcome all. They didn't realize just how deadly love really is. Thank heavens that the scientists and governments finally proved that love is in fact a disease and that there is a cure. Now everyone is safe after the procedure is done. You just have to make it to age 18 and then you can be sure that the deadly disease won't get you. Lena has counted down the days until her safety and she is so close. All she wants to do is be safe and she has complete trust that those in power are trying to do just that. But then, Lena meets someone--a boy someone. Life is flipped upside down and Lena doesn't understand any of it. Years of indoctrination are beginning to crumble around Lena and she doesn't know which side she wants to be on. Enjoyed the premise and plot line of the book. I love a good dystopian world and banning love definitely fits the bill. That being said, Lena kind of drove me nuts at times. I had to keep telling myself that the way she talked and acted was because of years of brainwashing and indoctrination. However, I wanted her to be a little stronger than what she was throughout. Also, I was a little disappointed in the pace of the book. It seemed a bit slow, but did pick up near the end. Overall a good book. There is some language in the book. I would gear this to high school and up.

A beautiful, almost poetic story of the bombings of Coventry England during World War II. The lives of two women who had previously met and spent an afternoon together are miraculously brought back into each other’s lives. While it can be argues that the plot is too contrived, Humphries does a beautiful job creating a sense of possibility out of such heartbreak and destruction. A quick read to get lost in.

Loved this book! I haven't read something like this in a very long time, if ever. Even though it was a book of fiction it truley felt like I was reading something that was very important. I hope the movie is just as good. Cant wait to read more from Kathryn Stockett.

Great details that illustrate the way we can obsess over lovers at the start of a relationship (or after many years, if passionate enough). I didn't like the protagonist right away, however, and the ending confirmed my initial opinion of her. Very well-written and a fast read.
