This was... not what I was expecting. One can easily see where the play has been cut up and re-assembled into the two stellar movies, but it's really quite a different plot when it comes right down to it. I love both of the movies, each in their own different way, and I love the play just as much for its differences. In particular, I think I liked the characters of Sabrina and Linus even better, and considering that both versions of the film are in my top-ten movies of all time list, that's really saying a lot. My imagination supplied the following cast for this version: Sabrina Fairchild... A pretty even split of Audrey Hepburn and Julia Ormond: my brain simply couldn't decide! By necessity the Sabrina of both films is a much more romantic-lead type character; this Sabrina wonders, at times, if she needs to marry anyone at all. I particularly liked her (view spoiler) Linus Larrabee... Humphrey Bogart (with a wee bit of Harrison Ford at the end). And, fucking hell, Linus just might be the greatest fictional crush of my entire life! Though I always adored Humphrey Bogart's Linus, and positively swooned for Harrison Ford's, this Linus is one that I have fallen head over heels in love with. I'd marry him. I, with all my grave reservations concerning marriage...! David Larrabee.... Greg Kinnear. (I'm sorry, William Holden, but nobody does dreamy-romantic-playboy like Greg Kinnear.) He's got this vibe about him, one of being terribly eager to please and genuinely earnest to find love, which was central to David's character in the play, less present in the 1995 version, but almost nonexistent in the 1954 film. Fairchild... John Williams, no question about it. Larrabee Sr.... Walter Hampden. What a fantastically grumpy old man! Maude Larrabee... Neither Nancy Marchand nor Nella Walker. I'm almost embarrassed to admit it, but my mind's eye Maude Larrabee was a blonde Joan Crawford. No, I don't know why. Julia was amazing! Sassy and fun, obviously very fond of Linus, but willing to call him out when he needed it. I'm sorry she wasn't in either version of the movie, but I can understand why she wouldn't have fit. I even liked Paul D'Argenson, he gave the play an extra dimension not in the films. Anyway, this was great. Highly recommended -- if you can find a copy. (After six months of searching I found mine in a dusty corner of a used book store. Good luck.)
