My kids introduced me to the Hunger Games series. It was written for a YA audience, but adult readers will appreciate it as well I am sure. Suzanne Collins rocks, and she does not pull any punches. I think that is vital in teen-oriented novels. Never black and white--every shade of gray is explored.

I read Promise Not to Tell just last week, and liked it enough to pick up Island of Lost Girls immediately after finishing the first one. I loved them both, but liked this one a little better. "Island" follows the same format of "Promise", flipping back and forth between the past and the present, with a whole web of secrets and mysteries connecting the two. In the present day (2006), 23-year-old Rhonda witnesses a little girl getting kidnapped at a local gas station one summer day, and subsequently sets about trying to find out took her. This brings up old mysteries of the past (1993), when Rhonda was a 10-year-old little girl herself, and we gradually learn what happened that summer through the surreal viewpoint of a child. I had to make myself a family tree, of sorts, for both time periods, to keep up with who was connected to who! I would highly suggest doing this so that valuable reading time isn't wasted on flipping back through pages while asking yourself "wait... who was she?" I look forward to reading Don't Breathe a Word at some point in the near future.
