I don't remember this one as well as the other 3 in the series, but the idea of using the exploded diamond shards from Jupiter's implosion was REALLY fun. The concept that we could use these large diamonds and huge elevators to get to space stations and avoid having to go through earth's atmosphere was really cool. Anyway, I geeked out on this book and had a blast.

A sigh of relief. The Astonishing Hypothesis was developed by Crick and Christof Koch. Having tried and failed to read the high level (and quite poorly written) The Quest for Consciousness by Christof Koch, I am delighted to find that this book is accessible and aims at explaining the same hypothesis, i.e. that the brain IS the sum of its parts and that the parts and processes are knowable. Can't wait to read the discussion on free will that he promises. So far, so good.

Cute art & dialogue, but what I liked most was how this book tackles gender roles and stereotypes. The main character, Asuka, is a boy who likes "girly" hobbies like sewing, shojo manga, cooking, and stuffed animals. He has a crush on Ryo, a girl who is terrible at cooking, cleaning, and sewing and who likes masculine men. Will these two ever be friends or even romantically linked?! I can't wait to read volume 2 to find out what happens next!!!

This was an edgy, interesting book. I haven't read anything else by Donnelly to compare this to, but I thought it was decent. It did drag for me in parts. It seems like YA books are getting longer and longer. I liked the musical references (even though I didn't recognize half of them), but I had mixed feelings about the main character. Overall, I did enjoy it and the fact that I learned some things about the French Revolution.

A pretty good book. Post apocalyptic earth where a group of people have survived by clocking themselves off from the external world on a remote island. As time passes they create their own society on strict ideals around the individual. The ideas and the story formed up well, with a nice twist at the end. I won't say I was completely satisfied with the ending but overall a good read.
