'How NOT to Write a Novel' is a very funny, witty, and effective guide for aspiring and published authors alike to better understand the creative downfalls that prevent a novel from being published. The authors were delightfully entertaining as they outlined mistakes and issues they see when reviewing novels and share their insights with a sample piece for every issue. I was immediately drawn into the book and although I'm not at the stage for revision of my novel yet, I learned a lot. I plan on going back and reading this book when I complete writing my own. My favourite thing about this book was how it made me literally laugh out loud. The authors do not present their lessons with 'do not write dream sequences', but take on a more conversational approach with "... it is now understood that reading page after page of characters' dreams about building walls with bricks of anguish is about as interesting as, well, listening to an actual stranger tell you about his actual dreams. A good approach is to allow one dream per novel. Then, in the final revision, go back and get rid of that, too." Both authors are authors of published works themselves and have been through the publishing scene; one actually worked as a publisher and editor and the other had taught writing. Their resumes back up that they know what they’re talking about and that lends credit to what they describe and explain in this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in writing. Even if you aren’t the researching and learning type and write from the heart, this book is at least very entertaining.
