I love this series and this is my favorite so far - it's a great story, very exciting and I really like the characters!

This is a beautifully written book. It is easy to read but not necessarily to understand! :-) The opening sections on the background of "string theory" (e.g., quantam mechanics) was not difficult to get my mind around. However, as the book continues, I've slowed down just trying to get my imagination around the infinitesmal universe.

This book is rectal effluence. Chrichton became a hack a long time ago. Unfortunately, he also became a shill for various causes that he claims to research meticulously, but clearly does not understand. His agenda is transparent and clumsy. He used to be able to tell a decent story, though. Such is not the case with this book. Not recommended.

Better as a reference book than a how-to-guide.

The “Oprah’s Book Club” sticker on White Oleander’s cover makes this book very easy to “poo poo”. It’s cathartic. It’s a women’s novel. But devaluing the novel on these assumptions makes readers miss out on the novel’s exploration of the female psyche. White Oleander is an involved novel. It details the complexities of the mother daughter experience, showing the power each one holds over the other. It is not a detached, omniscient narrator novel. Reading it like it is would be doing yourself a disservice. For me, the plot culminated when Astrid was in the delivery room with Niki. She notices that women in labor cry out for their mothers, even if their mothers mistreated or abandoned them. This moment shows just how far the mother daughter relationship affects the female psyche. I did notice some problems the ending. Astrid has now found her father and is in a relationship with a boy she had lost contact with. The plot jumped—it provided no logical connection as to how these things happened. The ending seems tacked on; the novel was complete after Niki admits that she needed Astrid. The natural ending is not happy, but it is contented. Then the plot goes on to impose this overly happy ending that seems out of place. It needs to be noted that males aren’t favorably portrayed. This has caused some people, mostly males, to be upset. To this issue I would pose the question: What about Steinbeck’s portrayal of females? When he creates one-dimensional female characters, female readers are asked to look beyond the sexism in order to see what the novel has to offer (in terms of plot, themes, etc.). With White Oleander, I ask males to do the same. This book is about the female psyche. The torture the author had to put Astrid through in order to pick apart the psyche might be too intense for some readers. That’s fine. Just because some readers cannot connect with it, though, is not an excuse to discount the literary value of the book itself.

KSR is usually brilliant, and this book started out promising to be great. However at a quarter of the way through I began to wonder whether the author had been partaking of some sort of psychotropic substances. The plot began to evaporate and the story digressed into a myriad of seemingly pointless little side trips. After several renewals at the library and only managing to read just under half (and that was a struggle), I took the book back. For me to not finish a book, let alone one by my favourite author, was just awful. This book actually left me depressed that KSR was never going to write another fabulous book again, but thankfully, "40 Signs of Rain" arrived shortly after and I'm feeling excited again.
Brilliant story that scared the crap out of me. I still have "dust bunny" nightmares. Shudder-inducingly good.

Oh California. I moved just, as it seemed, California was crumbling under the weight of its own dream. Seems I spend a lot of time daydreaming about the better days of California while trapped under Portland's gray skies. The essays in this story were exceptionally poignant for this ex-pat Californian. They examine California from all perspectives and confirmed both my daydreams and legitimate memories of my home state. This is the perfect collection for Californians, native and adopted, and those of us who long for its blue skies while knowing we can never go home again. This book lives on my nightstand for a quick California fix.
