This is a difficult book to describe. The author is writing about the life of a woman she knew who is destroyed by life under the communist regime in East Germany. It speaks to the reader about the dangers of totalitarianism, the freedom and beauty of the human spirit, and about relationships. The relationship between the author and the title character is in itself interesting. She is trying to keep the memory of Christa alive, and yet the author seems to say at times that she doesn't know if she even really knew Christa. As usual, this novel has alot of Wolf's brilliant examinations of the nature of memory -- memory is a recurring theme in all her novels. Wolf's gifts for language, imagery, and insight are stunning. The translation is well done. This is one of the best books I've ever read. I highly reccommend it.

Quite the exemplary description of a typical JET experience. The author is pretty good at putting some of the things we see, hear, feel, or experience into actual words, which as we all know escape us sometimes when we're trying to describe one of the many speechless episodes we go through here in Japan. I spent a lot of time laughing and thinking about my own experiences mirrored by those on the page.

In her ethnography, Consumption Intensified: The Politics of Middle-class Daily Life in Brazil, Maureen O’Dougherty sets out to define and problematize notions of middle-class through an investigation of consumption patterns and practices during a time of economic crisis in Brazil. Inevitably, her ethnography becomes about much more than middle-class consumption practices as she explores transnational flows of goods and capital and how the quest for modernity actively shapes consumption and identity. Ultimately, she examines the complex relationship between discourse and experience, combining participant observation, media analysis, interviews, and archival research to investigate the ways that Brazilian middle-class subjectivity is constantly shifting and shaped not only by economic and political forces, but also by native constructions of class. Ultimately, it could be argued that, “a classe media e um sonho, e ilusao” [the middle class is a dream, it’s an illusion].”

The premise of this fantasy book was very interesting and refreshing. A little different perspective on death, which was very imaginative. I liked the character Sabriel and of course her side character/love interest Touchstone. An easy, fantasy read.

So I didn't think this was as good as the first in the series. But it was good enough that I'm listening to the third right now!

I really enjoyed this one. It is a fiction book based on real-life events of the author Jane Austen. It's written in 1st person, and I liked how the author made a disclaimer at the end that she wasn't trying to copy Jane's writing voice ('cause in the last book I read, I felt the author was trying to do just that). She also includes what is real and what is fiction or inferred, which I appreciate. Needless to say, I learned a lot about Jane Austen and simply enjoyed the story, imagining what Jane may have felt herself during certain events in her life. Good read!

The continuation of Maerad's journey feels stronger than in the first of the quartet, mostly because the Tolkien similarities fade in the wake of Croggon's own imagination. The brilliant appendicies and language is still there but this time Edil-Amarandth doesn't feel like a long lost cousin to Middle Earth. Maerad's journey to find the Treestrong is captivating and her time spent in the snow swept world is a brilliant one. A great sequel

So sad ... but equally interesting and frustrating to read about a character who is so flawed.

Anomie rakibi Eliot'a dokunan şiirler.
