A very good book with short, one-page devotional studies on many religious topics. I like that the topics have scripture to back up the author's stance on issues. This was a good book to read through and each reader will find a few pages that interest them more than others. Some of the topics are very specific which was helpful. In addition there is a subject index and scripture index in the back. Very useful! I have read a couple of his books and like this one the best of the many he has written.

The most profound and moving of the series. I didn't dare to hope it would be this good.

While I was still on the first few chapters, I did something I rarely do: I decided to rate it before finishing it. Premature of me, yes, but the book was so gripping up until that point that I couldn't praise it enough. However, as other reviewers have noted, the middle part of the book (that's "part 2," I believe) drags on a little more than necessary. And, although I understand the author's need to get into all the minute details in order to give a very precise picture of the workings of the mind of the murderer, a slightly more concise approach would have worked better. Still, you have to give points for the sheer eloquence of the tone and that alone makes the long-drawn chapters seem worth it. Another thing that didn't appeal to me much was how the climax scenes were so far-fetched, that even for fiction, it all seemed a tad incredulous. Would I recommend this book then? Definitely. The eloquence of speech, the sinister idea, the careful unfolding of the plot all make it a good read. But be prepared for the book to hit a slump in the middle, then pick up speed again only to have an aporetic climax and ending.

Well, James Kugel is currently my favorite author on anything relating to Bible interpretation. He is scholarly & knowledgeable, yet also writes so clearly & accessibly that it's just a pleasure to "listen" to him (I feel like I'm listening when I read his books). In this book he considers numerous passages & books in the Hebrew Bible. He describes the best guesses of scholars as to what these passages may have originally meant, then traces how they've been interpreted through history (by both Jews & Christians).

At first I thought the fine writing made for a fine story, but as I read on, something started bothering me. It wasn't until the next book, and then the third one, that I gained some idea of what was bothering me. I read that far in case my children decided to read it, but it turns out they weren't that interested. For me this just started to feel like a soap opera for boys. The mood just never seemed to shift so I could breathe. I mean, there was some humor and other scenes. But somehow the rest of it was so heavy handed for me that any attempt to give me, the reader, a respite just fell flat. It is well crafted, but clunky for me. I think that where I enjoy delicate silver, this author works in baroque brass. He was young when he wrote the series, and his writing is quite good for his age; but something weighed it down. The violence in the story mainly revolves around battle scenes with fantasy figures. I personally was hit in the mother gut by a brief reference to an impaled baby, but that's just me. And it was milder than the weird violence of the later books. There is little or no sexual content (again, until later books) and the swearing is based on the worldbuilding of the story, which I always find refreshing and interesting for some amusing reason. Eragon simply didn't work well for me, and I'm rather glad my kids didn't get into it. I dislike when a series starts out with one book all right for a certain age, but then includes more 'older' issues in later books. I recognize that authors write over years. The odd thing is that many child readers take in those years within weeks or even days. There ought to be a name for such a phenomenon.

If you've read Housekeeping and think that this book will be similar, be warned. Robinson creates a radically different (but still excellent) plot and structure in Gilead. The novel is essentially a series of letters from an old dying preacher to his young son who will never know his father as an adult, except through these letters that contain doses of family history, fatherly advice, internal struggle, and "current" happenings. As the reader, you will become so sucked into the old man's narrative that you will begin to believe that you actually found this stack of letters, yellowed with age in the attic and addressed to you. Since this is Robinson we're talking about, her writing is as usual delicate and poignant; it glides along effortlessly until you slow down and notice how insanely talented it really is. I kept thinking, "this is so good...how could this be so good?" Then I remembered that I wasn't the only one raving--the novel did win a Pulitzer.

This was OK. I guess that's not nearly as good as many other books I've read lately so look further if you want a page turner.
