I really enjoyed this novel. It was sad but hopeful, although the ending (which I won't reveal, my pretties, you'll have to read it to find out) leaves itself open to debate as to what actually happened. Very good.

4 stars – Contemporary Romance/Erotica/BDSM I’m torn between giving 4 or 5 stars for Wicked Burn because although I enjoyed the writing, story, and steamy eroticism for a contemporary romance, I really disliked the characters, so I’m settling with 4 stars. Vic and Niall waste no time in scorching the sheets, and I liked the whole ‘how do we go from a one night stand to something deeper?’ aspect of the story. The sex scenes are smoking hot, but left me feeling cold because I never felt a connection between Vic and Niall and Vic’s bedroom demeanor is callous, selfish, and distant. Actually, Vic is a cold brute in and out of the bedroom, so he really rubbed me the wrong way on all fronts. Niall is a passive doormat who not only tolerates Vic’s cruel behavior but begs for more, even though she separated from an abusive husband...go figure. Both characters had lots of emotional baggage, and I felt like instead of taking the sex-will-fix-us route, Vic and Niall were in need of some honesty and good communication. I’m a fan of good BDSM erotica and can appreciate D/s relationships with the best of them, but Vic’s cold dominant behavior just plain pissed me off. His whole ‘you’ll take it or else’ got old, especially since he never showed a tender or soft side, even when Niall's sad and painful past is revealed. Overall, Wicked Burn is a really good story with lots of explicit, blistering hot, erotic sex scenes, but I just didn’t quite feel the love. Still, it’s worthy of 4 stars.

This was really a bit of a reality check... My dance instructor suggested reading this when we were learning about the Gypsy dances. Sometimes I think that the Romany people are treated with a bit of romance/fantasy, but it's surreal to read about how these different groups live...

This review originally posted on my blog: http://utahmomslife.blogspot.com/2011... In The Space Between Us, Thrity Umrigar takes her readers around the planet to Bombay, India which at first seems like a completely different world with it's own unique cultures and customs. However, the people in India are just that--people. And people really aren't that different from each other whether they live in Bombay, Salt Lake City or Copenhagen--we all dream for a better future, for love, for understanding. Umrigar tells this story of human desires in the setting of Bombay where the very poor work in the houses of the middle class (labor is very cheap and they lack the conveniences such as dishwashers and washing machines, so even the middle class have maids). There are distinct divisions between the classes. Even the most well treated maids must use separate dishes and are not allowed to sit on the furniture. Bhima has worked for Sera for many many years. They have become close and over the years Sera has paid for Bhima's granddaughter Maya to attend school and college. Now seventeen year old Maya is pregnant and everyone around her insists that she have an abortion so that she can return to college and not "ruin" her life. The destruction of the child will have lasting effects for both Bhima and Sera's families. Bhima and Sera are not so very different in their personal desires and neither, whether learned and well-off or impoverished and illiterate, have had much power to direct the flow of their own lives. The descriptions of the slums in which Bhima and Maya live are raw. Umrigar is a skilled weaver of beautiful and powerful fiction. She writes so well that I felt as if I were walking along the beach with Bhima and buying balloon animals from her balloonwalla or breathing in the smells from the open air market. Dealing with painful subjects such as extreme poverty, abortion, rape and illiteracy (not unique to India), this is not a novel that will warm you heart. However, Umrigar treats these subjects with dignity and honesty through the sensitive eyes of two believable and likable characters. I found the novel both gripping and heart breaking. It moved me.

Although this is normally the kind of book I enjoy, this one fell a smidge short of my expectations. I can't really put my finger on why. Perhaps it is Judy Blooms style that I din't enjoy that much. To be fair I should read another of her books to judge, but will have to wait until I really have nothing else to read.

Great book to use for meditation and life examination. Also a great book for people who are interested in life coaching, being or seeing one. I would recommend this for anyone who wants to make a change in their life, or even anyone who just wants to look at their life.

The plot is entertaining. The history/culture is enthralling. The dialog and math is overlong and overdone. It took me a month before I could decide if I really cared for the book overall. I've come to the decision that I would put up with the dialog to read his next book just to discover what happens next to the characters.

it's incredible how much better this is than that godawful movie. if you have any interest in the subject whatsoever, this is the best place to start. for further reading, turn to google; the full story is NOT in this book.
