I can't believe you could make a living from carving, then making plaster busts. Some of the trouble his friend gets into is ridiculous. Diabetes must have been hard to live with back then.

K.L. Going is so fantastic! I listened to the audio book of this title and it was amazingly done. The characters are so well developed, the plot is unique and keeps the book moving, and, like all of Going's books, I laughed out loud and also held back some tears. Fat Kid Rules the World is the story of Troy, an 300 lb. teenager living in NYC. Troy is contemplating throwing himself in front of a subway train on day when Kurt McRae, somewhat of a local punk rock legend, speaks to Troy and saves his life. An unlikely friendship between the hesitant Troy and the manic, crazy, homeless, creative energy that is Kurt ensues. Before Troy knows it, Kurt somehow thinks that they are forming a band and that Troy will be the drummer! What follows is a moving and funny tale of friendship, self-confidence, and punk rock music. I really can't say enough good things about this book - I was so bummed when it ended becauase I really wanted to keep living in Troy's head. The biggest challenge for this book, I think, is getting teens to pick it up. For such a great book, it can be a hard sell to convince teens to read about fat kids and punk music (of course its about so much more than that). I love it though, so I'll keep singing its praises to teens who walk into my library.

I quite enjoyed reading this book. It was recommended to me by the person who first showed me Firefly, and while I was bad and read it sitting in the aisles of Barns & Noble, I did go back and buy it a month or two later. Some of the essays hit topics I wasn't enthusiastic about myself, but I could see how fans of the other subjects that Firefly and it's colorful 'verse were being compared to would enjoy them. There was only one essay I didn't like, and I felt was off base, the one by Nancy Holder called "I Want Your Sex: Gender and Power in Joss Whedon's Dystopian Future World". That essay was actually why I bought the book, I planned to write an essay of my own and tear apart this woman's words that I felt were so off base. I may still write the essay one day, but for now I will settle for making my disagreement public on this website.

I'm pretty amazed at how much I enjoyed this book, cause I wasn't expecting much from it. It was action packed, sci-fi goodness. What surprised me, though, was how thought provoking it was. I wasn't expecting to want to read any more from this trilogy, but I've already got Pretties on reserve and can't wait to get it!

Ended up being a good book. Again, I'm not sure that I love the series, but I'm hoping that the third and final chapter will blow me away.

strange, but pretty good. the ending was a let down, though.
