This is the first psychoanalytic work I had read outside the context of a theory class. It was a strange experience. I found that I was much more forgiving. There's a simple, but lovely observation about Dora at the end that made me weep. Just an aside: contrary to what other people have suggested, this book didn't make me feel crazy, it made me feel normal.

I read this on a friend's recommendation and found it (i) inspired me to travel to remote places, (ii) made a compelling, believable argument for the presence of energy, modes of communication (with the past and future, as well as with each other), and other paranormal phenomenon which we know yet little about. His ability as a writer is enjoyable, and having this be the only memoir-like work he's put together, I found it interesting to learn about him...his med school transition is particularly interesting, as is the birth of his traveling to unique, far-away places. All in, a great read.

More of a 4.5, I don't like that they don't give you the option of a half-star! I loved this book, it's stream of consciousness, historical fiction, ethereal quality is unlike anything I've read before. Beautifully written and thoughtful.
