** spoiler alert ** This is the sequel to The Princess and the Goblin, where the adventure continues for Curdie, Princess Irene, and her magical beautiful glorious great-great-grandmother. I liked the story, but the ending! It felt so abruptly and hastily wrapped up, like George MacDonald got tired of the storyline and just wanted to finish the book. :( There's truth in fairy tale, though. Curdie is given the ability to discern upon touching someone's hand whether they are as they seem, or whether they are becoming a beast inside (and what kind of beast - a snake's tail, or an ox's hoof, or a vulture's claw, etc). It's all about how a person's outward appearance and character can be deceiving, and also how you can't easily tell whether they are becoming more beast-like, or perhaps becoming good and less beast-like.

At first, I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book. To be honest, I thought Krugman was just going to be too liberal for me. I was expecting to be bowled over with statistics and numbers, and I imagined I would read this book thinking, "yeah, but.. I'm not so sure if I buy this argument." Well.. there are a lot of statistics and numbers, sure. But.. that's not really the point of this book, I don't think. Krugman IS liberal -- but he makes a convincing case for why that's a very GOOD thing and why it's okay to really embrace liberal thinking. I guess this book just helped point out my own faults to me. I want to think of myself as "liberal-minded," but then some sort of knee-jerk sense of moderation kicks in and I tell myself, "well okay, but not that THAT liberal." Sometimes, moderation for its own sake just isn't worth it. On the down side, Krugman is a little bit of a conspiracy-theory bamboozler when it comes to hard-right conservatism and the "Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy" that's infected our politics. I'm not sure he really makes the case that conservatives are inherently evil. But he does a good job of explaining why many of them are fundamentally misguided.

I resisted reading this when it came out and everyone was hyped about it...so here we are several years later and I pick it out at the 'brary. It was a good, quick read. Would be great for the beach. Am planning to watch the movie to compare.

I've started shopping at the local farmers' market and at the organic market to get me by between farmers' market sundays. It's also changed the way I think about eating beef. Not my favourite of the Dalemark Quartet, though it links in clearly with Cart and Cwidder. Still a great read, and perhaps has some new relevance around the whole freedom fighter/terrorist point of view. This book of course also introduces Matt, a vital character for the Crown of Dalemark. It also introduced me to boating! For some reason I think of Holland when I read this book, not sure if that was intentional or not.
