This was the first book on the syllabus for ENG/Women's Studies 307, (100 years of Southern Women Writers), in which I am serving as a graduate-level TA. It seemed too dry and abstract at first, but, as we progressed into novels by black women writers like Alice Walker and autobiographical writing by Zora Neale Hurston and others, it proved to serve as a good background about the ways of thinking in the segregated south.

I am not exactly what you'd call an avid reader. I don't have the patience to wait for a book to get good, it has to hook me right away, or it will wind up just collecting dust. This book had me hooked from start to finish... I don't care if it was a little cheesy, sometimes I like a fiction book to entertain me without an intellectual challenge. After all that's what my textbooks were for while I was earning my biology degree.

(Young Adult, Historical Fantasy) Jacob grows up listening to his grandfather's stories of the peculiar children he grew up with in an orphanage. When Jacob's grandfather is suddenly killed, Jacob begins to believe the strange stories his grandfather used to tell. Jacob's search for the orphanage reveals the twisted world his grandfather came from and the danger his grandfather's friends face. I was a bit frightened when I began reading the book because I don't do scary. (CSI episodes are scary to me, all right?) But the book just turned more spooky and eerie than scary. I really enjoyed this one. I enjoyed the unraveling of the mysteries and the ghoulish qualities of the characters. Above all, I am fascinated in the author's ability to craft an imaginative, creative, and engrossing story out of photographs he came across. Two thumbs up. It is more than a two but less than a three, but nothing in between. I never liked Damen anyway. He is too one dimensional. It seems as if Noel throw in his past and his parents' death for no reason, considering it contributed nothing to the story. At least Drina was an interesting character. edit: I haven't had the chance to read any of the books that came after blue moon, mainly because I hear they're awful. So I am not excrutiatingly disappointed I have not read them yet. WIll later.

So far, I am not enjoying this book. I'd love to just set it aside, and not pick it up again. The writing is horrible, the grammar and punctuation must not have had an editor. And the author, well, she brought a lot of the pain on herself, and seems to blame it on everyone else. The title had me very excited about this book, but I don't see it getting any better. update: Ok it did get a little better. but I still feel much like I felt before. The author put herself in some bad situations and then blamed those around her when things didn't work out. She was constantly in one new business venture after another. I really think the book was just done as another venture to try and make money. I again, did like that she gave a lot of credit to God, and I think that may be the only saving grace of this book.
