That is, given our minds' evolved dispositions, the way we live in groups, the way we communicate with other people, and the way we produce inferences, it is very likely that we will find in any human group some religious representations, whose surface details are specific to a particular group. Religious concepts are influenced by the way the brain's inference systems produce explanations without our being aware of it.

There are some authors in this world who just have the gift and this author is one of those people. So descriptive and so thought provoking-I hope he keeps writing more. (I have also read A Thousand Splendid Suns and liked that even better.) The writing in this book is brilliant, though the storyline is devastating in many parts. I am not someone who shies away from a depressing book but this one was surprisingly tragic in many parts. There were a few things in this book that didn't quite gel for me-like his relationship with his father which took a drastic change about midway through the book. I thought that was unrealistic. Otherwise a great book. (I was warned ahead of time that it is graphic and has some bad language. Both of which are true.)

This was an excellent book. Beautiful writing and a very intriguing story. Yet another book that brings to life another aspect of WWII and racism. I might even forgo my dislike for Ethan Hawke and watch the movie!

Book about the Galveston hurricane of 1900 that killed 8000-12000 people. So much research went into compiling the book that it reads like a novel. Fantastic, just to give the author credit for all the work he put into it. I don't think you have to love weather in order to love the book, but it's hard to say.
