I won this book from a fellow Tate author who I am friends with on Facebook. I usually prefer my religious reading to be non-fiction. However, this is a heart-warming tale of faith, forgiveness, love and the power of prayer. It answers the age old question: "Why do bad things happen to good people?" It shows that we can endure tragedy and change our lives for good when we turn to the Savior. I'm giving it 4 stars because I need points in Heaven.

Just reread this for the first time since school, still really like it even though my copy still has all my school notes and my sisters.

I have to admit, I wasn't really expecting to get into this novel. Overall I do like steampunk, but I've never really sought out any books in the genre. Most of my experience has been through movies & the odd webcomic such as Girl Genius. That's why I was pretty surprised that I was so easily drawn into this book. The author takes a huge amount of risks in this book & I respect that. Not only did is the main character a complete sociopath that kills animals & maims people in retribution for real (or imagined) slights, but it's a female character that does these things & the author doesn't try to sugarcoat any of it. Erica is insane, yet there's really no big attempt to make these things seem socially acceptable or pardonable. I rather liked this story- it's a good idea & apart from my open mouthed horror at Erica's actions, I found myself fascinated by her actions. I'll be honest & say that I didn't like her character, but then the main character doesn't have to be likable or sympathetic as long as the story keeps you entertained & captivated. My only real complaints about the book was that while the characters were pretty decently done, I didn't get a good sense of the world as a whole. I knew what the motivations of each character were, but as far as knowing what daily life was like or what the world was like, those details were at a minimum. There's enough here to fuel the plot along, but I couldn't help but feel that the story would have been greatly improved with just a little bit more world building. It just kept the book from really being as good as it could have been. There's a sequel to this, so I really do hope that the author gives us more than just a brief glance at Erica's world as well as the events taking place in it. Final Diagnosis: Overall this was a fun read & far better than what I'd expected, but a lack of definition in the overall world kept this steampunk tale from really soaring. At times it reminded me of Kafka'sThe Metamorphosis. Only more accessible. The line between reality and delusion is blurry. But most of the time it didn't, which is good. I didn't really enjoy Metamorphosis. I did, however, enjoy this. The story is circular; the story has no real beginning or end. I like think the story could go on ad infinitum.

I can't say that this book had me passionate; it was a quick summer read. There was nothing notable in this read for me I'm sorry to say... A rookie EMT falls for a woman that he helps save, the relationship results in a child & quickly unravels which leaves him to raise a child alone. That is basically the premise of the book. Honestly... there is not much more to it.

Well, Ondaatje is becoming one of my very most favourite authors! I love his writing style (like reading poetry!! And probably not for everyone!) I had seen the movie a number of years ago -- and began wondering if this really was the same book!! First of all, this book focuses on different characters and a differentromance than those focused on in the movie. Second, you really get to know the characters in much more depth in this book than you do in the movie. (although you get to know the Indian sapper and English nurse much more than you would ever imagine if you have seen the movie.) The English patient in this book is not a very central figure -- but rather the catalyst for the discussions, the feelings and the actions which happen. Once again, Ondaaatje beautifully portrays the loneliness, longings and needs, particularly for connection, of his characters.

Phenomenal book by gay rights activist, film maker, and AIDS sufferer Derek Jarman that took aim at the anti-sexual undertones of the cultural response to the AIDS crisis.

** spoiler alert ** Let the Great World Spin is a very well written book. Unfortunately it is not a style of writing that I enjoy. It is very slow paced and the beginning takes some effort to get through - although eventually you do start to care about the characters. The book is set in NYC during the summer of 1974 with Frenchman Philippe Petit’s walk across the World Trade Centers serving as the backdrop. McCann introduces a number of diverse characters, including a wealthy Park Avenue judge, a poor immigrant priest, a family of prostitutes and a couple of artists. It is not until the second part of the book that the reader begins to understand how all these stories are woven together. The reader then starts to see that like NYC itself and the old World Trade Center buildings that these stories build upon each other and are all interconnected. It just is so very time consuming getting there. Be warned that although Let the Great World Spin is an interesting book it is certainly not a light, quick read.
