Reduce waste. Great book if you think there is a lot of waste in business. Goes over some good concepts about where waste sneaks in and can get integrated into daily business.

This book is amazing! If you are a fan of Silence of the Lambs, And The Red Dragon, Hannibal is a must read! Even if you saw the movie Hannibal, I recommend this book because there are many things that were not included in the movie that I think were significant. The ending is WAY different than the movie. If you were dissapointed about the ending of the movie, I assure you that the ending of the novel will NOT dissapoint!

Classic. I just re-read it not so long ago and it made a lot more sense than in high school.

Another great Terry Pratchett book about the City Watch. Lord Ventinari has been poisoned and golem's are running amuck in Ankh Morpork. Also Wee Mad Arthur, supposedly a gnome, but totally an early Nac Mac Feegle!

Incredible book, this one will leave me sad for days I'm sure. What concise, beautiful and tragic writing.

I was really excited when I started reading this book. Jane was a great character at 14 and the beginning with her brother seemed to hold a lot of promise. This could've been 3 different books or at least short stories--didn't understand why the grandmother--an interesting character, got pushed aside for the aunt--except that it helps establish Jane being in NYC. The whole Archie story was bizarre and then it occurs to me that I've seen the movie on Lifetime with Alec Baldwin! That was too weird for me. What did the part about the neighbors, the Solomons have to do with anything?! Nevermind the whole bicycle-boy cancer drama...! The "voices" Jane hears at the end were so disturbing I found it very difficult to read. The more I think about it the more I come up with to criticize: Jamie as bartender?! Did I miss the super-close relationship between father and daughter somewhere--the end seemed a little contrived. Oh well, I could never have written it myself, and there were parts were I really enjoyed Jane's sense of humor...worth discussing at any rate!

A great story about a 20-something, independent woman in New York City before the outbreak of World War II. Katey falls in love with a great man, but fate has other ideas.

My favorite character in Dune was the planet. As a water scientist I really enjoyed hearing about the environmental and social issues that the author imagined would arise on a fantastically dry planet. I had several issues with the book that I struggled to overcome. I didn’t like that the main characters in the book were all rich and powerful royalty. I think the book would have been more interesting from the point of view of the poor or the servants. I also didn’t like the many clichés that were in the book. I realize that Dune is an important sci-fi novel and most of the clichés that bothered me probably originated from this book and were then copied by other authors. However, there’s the whole concept of a young man being chosen as “the one” that plays out in so many fantasy and sci-fi books. It begins to get a little old. I also found the female characters in the book to be largely uninspiring. The Lady Jessica was at least interesting, but I found it annoying how she was always ceding control to the males in her life. It’s the sort of thing that can be generally expected in old-school science fiction, but it was galling nonetheless. I would be interested to read some critiques of the way that Dune portrays minorities. Sci-fi is an interesting genre in that it often times takes the ingrained prejudices of it’s time, transforms them in an alternate universe and gives the reader a new perspective. There was the bene gesserit race, which was a matriarchy, made with the entire purpose of serving. They are often referred to derogatively as witches. They represent the fear of powerful women, wielding their power through procreation and mind control. Then there was the Baron, who was casually referred to as not just homosexual, but a child molester who wishes to commit incest. I’m not taking a “for or against” stance on these matters, I just find them interesting food for thought. Overall it was a fairly engaging book. I certainly plan on reading the rest of the series.

This book could have been great - it started great - and it fell flat about 1/3 the way through. The end revived it some, but it never got its full momentum back. I would probably read the upcoming installments in the series if they're published, but I really hope the author gets a grasp on dialogue. It was soooooo bad!
