Intriguing world but parts of it weren't explained enough and the pacing was a bit uneven. Still, I liked it enough to want to read more and it was certainly steamy and imaginative.

Marcelo's voice seemed genuine and I liked that he had to grapple with gradations of not-so black and white issues of right and wrong. Just as most teens do, Marcelo finds out things about his father that are somewhat ugly, then has to decide what he will do with the information. He matures over this summer of challenges even though he would have preferred to stay in the comfortable sheltered environment of Paterson, working with the ponies. Being in "the real world" is not always comfortable, but it expands his horizons. I'd recommend this to readers who enjoyed The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

This book is not one of those, "Let's look at all the bad things you have done and how can you change it so everyone's life is better and you can be happy" books. It's a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol aren't very good comparisons to this book. The only thing similar is that there are parts when the characters look back on their life. But rather than showing Eddie how he could have made things differently or what life would have been like without him there, Eddie is just shown his life again, allowing himself to make his own observations and realizations. The book also makes the reader do that to themselves. It makes the reader, without even knowing it, take a look back at their own lives. It makes them realize that every one can effect someone else in one way or another, no matter how small an impact. That you effect everyone you come into contact. Perhaps reading this book will make us value our own selves more and perhaps it will make us value other people more. This book is also a slight reassurance if you've ever lost loved ones. It makes you feel good to know that you could see them again. This book isn't about faith or heaven or God or beliefs. It's about people and human nature. It's about mankind, love, and reaching out to one another. The Five People You Meet in Heaven isn't a long or difficult read, but it's a book that will stay with you for years to come or even the rest of your life.

I really thought I would like this book, and I wanted to like it. At the beginning of the book it seemed like most of it was about boys that Anne liked. Not so thrilling. Then when the Frank family is in hiding, Anne recounts the tedious torture. You really feel her pain and just how tedious it is! She talks about the other people hiding and how they get on her nerves. I was hoping for more history. I do think it might be a good book for a middle/high school aged girl that would enjoy reading someone's diary.

Shrinking Violet was actually an ADORABLE novel... 100% predictable...but hey, it was still fantastic! The shy girl of our story, Tere is horribly and chronically shy- a true shrinking violet. But she slowly opens up with the help of a cute, goth boy Gavin, and her own strength as "Sweet T" on the radio. Tere is funny and this read was relaxing, i don't have a lot of criticisms... EXCEPT (of course) that Tere's mom was totally bitchhyy! i think our author may have exaggerated a bit with her character in making her point about Tere's home life. Other than that, simple. cute. a great read :)
