I started reading this because I have always had an insatiable drive to know the big WHAT-IS-IMPORTANT-IN-LIFE. Undeniably, we have so many choices and not all that much time. I read books like this as sort of a short-cut: if I read what other people think is worthwhile, maybe I can skip some of my own paths that eventually turn into dead ends. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on which way I'm looking at it), a dear friend of mine dropped dead unexpectedly while I was in the middle of it. She was no where near the "right age" to die, and she had no advance warning. Suddenly, I realized there was a futility in wasting my time reading this - because it was using up what time I had left, when I really should be Out There just, LIVING, in whatever shape or form I end up with. So that is my review: Good Book. Wrong Time. Possibly entirely unneccessary.

This book is a great cross between the imaginitive and intellectual powers of Chuck. He brings up the excellent concept that in order to be creative, a person must suffer sufficently. It is, for example, like a car. Without friction a car will only spin its tires and go nowhere. People need friction too. This is what Chuck gets at in his very unique way.

I remember liking this book a lot more when I read it the first time. I think a lot of it has to do with the time one reads a book, and maybe I was just too distracted when I read it. Not that this isn't a fantastic book. It's quick, too, so I might end up reading it again later in life.

Written as a breathless sci-fi thriller, with shifting perspectives to tell the story of Earth Security agent a la 007, Ian Cormac, as he is re-finding his own humanity after 30 years of mindlink to AI. Hounded by the inexplicably-insane terrorist Arian Pelter, Cormac investigates the malfunctioning and explosion of a runcible (teleportation devices which renders time and space meaningless) that destroyed an entire planet. Set in a world ran by AIs that easily passed version x of the Turing test; Golemns created but possessing personhood, therefore required to pay for their freedom and creation price by service to the companies that constructed them; nerve-blocked surgeries where the flesh is easily peeled apart to get at the bones and organs... Easy and rapid inter-galactic travel via runcible devices... The interference in human history of an alien bio-mechanic creature called Dragon... All very fascinating stuff. The upside: this is a rapid read. The downside: plot threads seem somewhat scattered. Some people's motivations are murky and strange. So who, or what, did blow up the planet? And what was up with Dragon? This is very clearly the first book in a series. Maybe some of my questions will be answered down the line. Given how difficult it was to push through the last 100 pages, I'm in no hurry for Book 2.

This book is probably better than your book.

A proper ending to the series. The ethical side of these books are amazing--to steal from the back of the book, they explore the evolution of human ethics. This is a fascinating exploration of what may very well be facing humans some day.
